Well, there's a technical difference between abstaining and "not voting".
Abstaining means very specifically that they were present and did not register a vote.
"Not voting" (which is how they're reported on THOMAS) could mean they weren't even in the building at the time of the vote.

A little Google-fu shows that the latter is the case for Sen. Inhofe, who is recovering from emergency heart surgery on Oct 7, and wasn't expected to be back in Washington for at least two weeks.

James Inhofe (R-OK) did not vote.
Ugh, that's almost worse than voting against when it comes to something like this.

Wow, bet you feel pretty bad now.  :P

Xantalos, think about who you're talking about.

It's the same thing.

I just used ABSTAIN because I wanted to use just one word (instead of the two-word phrase "not voting"). :)

They wouldn't negotiate with Obama, why would they negotiate with the Incredible Hulk?

Deathtrap, negotiate, they're synonyms to the tea-party.

I don't want to live in this state anymore. Seriously, he's not up for reelection voting against until 2016, and there's no way the political fallout will last that long. Grah!

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Take heart, everyone. Of the 45 Senators who are GOP members, more than half (24) are up for reelection in 2016, because they were elected or re-elected in the Tea Party wave of 2010. I suspect a number of them aren't going to survive- among their potential number are John McCain (could very well retire, Arizona will start to shift purple), Richard Burr (North Carolina), Kelly Ayotte (New Hampshire- she's not that bad, though), Rob Portman (Ohio, but supports gay marriage), Chuck Grassley (Iowa), Marco Rubio, Pat Toomey (Pennsylvania), very possibly Johnny Isakson (Georgia), and Mark Kirk (Illinois).

However, the Democrats had a similar, but smaller, wave in 2008 with Obama's election, and those Senators will face re-election this coming cycle. Among the possible casualties are Mark Pryor (Arkansas), Mary Landrieu (Louisiana), Max Baucus of Montana's newly vacated seat, Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia's newly vacated seat (both declining to run for re-election), Kay Hagan (North Carolina), and Tim Johnson (South Dakota). So it's really a crapshoot at this remove.
