What I can't stand is "No matter how many times X is tried, it always fails and always means oppression in the end!"

I've heard X be social policies, non-night watchmen states, environmentalism, secularism, taxation, democracy, and much more.
That is refferred to as the "Whig" interpretation of History. The Whig Party uses it, which was once the Other Political party in the US. They failed around the time of the Civil war, where they were marginalized in their attempt to navigate between the Democratic and Republican parties positions on Slavery.

Dawn of
The First Day
-72 Hours Remain-

I'm so, so sorry. I just couldn't help myself :P . (If you don't understand where this is coming from, it's Majora's Mask.)

Here's to a hopefully fruitful round of talks this week, before the end!

EDIT: Of course, 'dawn' is meant in a more figurative sense than in the game. Ooh, also I appear to be first post on the next page, so the top of this post makes a nice page header :)

Ah fuck, I was hoping to make that joke. Crap, now I have to wait until the next apocalypse. And while 2012 was a good joke, who knows when the next could be?

Wow, I appear to have managed to just make it. I was getting shakingly nervous as I was finishing up that someone would at least post something, and my post would no longer be the first of the third-to-last day. I wasn't even considering other joke-makers. Phew.  :)

Oh-ho-ho, I was already planning on it! I'll be sure to keep close watch for when FearfulJesuit next changes the topic title (or 00:00 EDT approaches, whichever comes first).

And in the interests of being on topic, looky here what news.google.com had at the top of its page from about 2 minutes ago: Senate Democrats Press New Front in Budget Battle

Bold move on the Dems' part, but they just might have the leverage at this point, so why not?

Never laughed so hard at impending doom in all my life... Even if the world crumbles I don't give a fuck anymore, it is now worth it.
Also, anybody know a time traveling banker?

The banker doesn't time travel, he marks you with a special stamp that will tell him how much money you have deposited. Even if this is your first time there as far as he knows. You're basically committing massive amounts of fraud.

I'm betting Robert Downey Jr myself. It's like Tropic Thunder, but the situation is far worse.

I think it's a bad move. In doing so, they cede the moral high ground. Hate to admit it, but Bob Corker (R-TN) pretty much nailed it:

Quote
"There's no question that House Republicans overreached in trying to use this negotiation to repeal a [health care] bill that was very central to the president's agenda,'' said Mr. Corker. "The same thing is happening on the Democratic side among Senate leadership as pushed by the White House. They're trying to now undo a law put in place in 2011, the Budget Control Act.''

Before this, if the debt ceiling is breached, the lion's share of blame falls on the Republicans, and polls have backed that. Now....it's an equal-opportunity disaster.
