And to chime in on the discussion, there really ought to be some sort of exit polling for congressmen and politicans in general. If the people don't express enough satisfaction with their performance they are fired from a cannon into a big wall. If the people are satisfied enough they are allowed to live, and if the satisfaction os overwhelmingly positive they get to have another go at the position of they want to.

Because holy fuck you'd need to bloody that wall a lot right now.

I for one think this is a fantastic development. It should be clear now that we need a total obliteration of the political orthodoxy. No more war-mongering Democrats! No more police-state Republicans!

From this moment forward every time anyone in the country steps into a voting booth, they will remember that every single politician in the government cooperated to bring this about, and all of them should be thrown out and replaced immediately.

If we're lucky this fiasco will at least squash the Tea Party movement a good bit. Regular politicians are bad, but these guys...they're getting downright stupid evil.

I wouldn't count on it. Part of their mythos is this notion that they are the last bastion of freedom in the face of an increasingly oppressive, totalitarian socialist government.

So if they're forced to cave, it just feeds their narrative.
If Obama does an end-run around them, it feeds their narrative.
If the establishment GOP breaks with them and forces a bill through, it feeds their narrative (that the GOP has lost its way, and that they are the only REAL conservatives left).

I don't think they have any illusion that they're going to derail the ACA. But it's a win-win situation for them. Even defeat "proves" them right. It's the same general strategy that religious extremists use.

Yeah. Pretty much everything we're saying here is being said party-flipped by the GOP on some other forum. Likely including "this'll push more voters away from them."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's actually literally correct, isn't it? Attempting armed rebellion to overthrow the United States is the most blatant possible example, right? It's not just undermining the United States or something that seems like it should be treason, it is actually the clearest imaginable thing you could point to if you had to explain the concept.

Earliest that would impact them would be November 2014 -- 13 months from now.
If they manage to force a default, 2014 elections will be the least of their worries.

If (as I'm suspecting will be the outcome) they force Obama to resort to some kind of end-run to avoid default (Constitutional or otherwise), it'll just fire up their base more.

Besides, many of them believe (or least espouse the belief) that a default would be a GOOD thing. Tough love/shock therapy/whatever. It's a snake oil that they can sell, knowing there's little chance the grown-ups in charge will actually allow it to happen. Then when the grown-ups step in and avoid a default, they can tell their followers, "See?? We were just about to fix everything, when the mean nasty government overlords stopped us to please their corporate masters/those welfare leeches/illegal immigrants/anybody that's not like you..."
