By the time one can ask if something is on Youtube, it is generally on Youtube.

The highlight was probably him reading out Green Eggs and Ham, without once thinking about how it could relate to what he was doing.

Only Ted Cruz could read a book who's main message is that you should be willing to give change a chance while trying to justify cutting what meager healthcare reform the US has before it even does most of what it is supposed to do.

To be honest, since gas is cleaner than coal, one of the best and cheapest way to cut emissions both of CO2 and of noxious chemicals on the short-to-medium term would be to switch from coal to gas everywhere.

Switching from coal to anything is progress.

Problem is that with coal prices dropping, usage increases, and generally in countries that don't care about advanced emission reducing installations.

The Senate has bounced the bill back to the house, since they went out of their way to defeat the Filibuster in 79-19 vote, (with the Republican Senate leadership joining the effort), and the bill itself passed 54-44. There are now 2 challanges remaining:
  • John Boehner must decide to order a vote on it (He can simply send it back to the senate, essentially guarenteing a shutdown)
  • The House has to pass it (More likely then it was the first time, since the vote has gone from "Defund Obamcare Y/N" to "Defund the Government Y/N")

If either of these things do not happen, go the other way, or hell even happen off schedule, the government will be, at least temporarily, shutdown.

At this point a part of me wants it to happen. There's no surer way to make the more extreme arm(s) of the Republican party in congress absolutely vilified than shutting down government services for an indeterminate stretch of time, and being proud of it. That probably won''t happen though. My money is on Boehner ordering a vote that passes, narrowly, and let the issue come up again in a few months to make Obama look bad some more. I don't think it will work forever, but that's what has worked for him in the past.

Oh yeah and the other piece of news, Obama and Rouhani spoke today by telephone, marking the first time the leaders of the US and Iran have spoken since 1979, before the Islamic Revolution.

My Farsi prof's daughter actually interviewed Rouhani on the phone before he talked to Obama. He'll be really good for Iran, I think. People think of Iran as this scary boogeyman...but in actuality, the Iranian people are pretty moderate and cool with the West (I think I read a study done a couple years ago that showed that religion is more important in the lives of Americans than Iranians), and they deserve better than what they had. (Yeah, Ahmedinejad was a dick. But Ahmedinejad was representative of Iranians the way Dick Cheney was representative of Americans).

What Iran's people want ultimately isn't that relevant to what Iran is and does. It was and is an Islamist theocracy.

A dictatorial regime going against the will of the people doesn't last long. Especially not when the economy goes bad.

The Iranian Theocracy is not as absolute as it sometimes seems.
