When were they? I remember footage on the Daily Show of John Kerry threatening to block  disaster relief bill if an unrelated help for Massachusetts fishermen wasn't put in.

Let it be said that (!!shock!!) sometimes politicians will appear to make a stand on something they know they have no hope of achieving for the sake of their voter base.

As for the legality of earmarking, I can't find anything saying that earmarks are banned, the issue appears to be a lack of consensus on what constitutes earmarking.

I've been reading about a derecho (land hurricane) building. "Currently, the storm clusters are predicted to spawn between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday evening, hitting the major cities of Milwaukee, Chicago, Indianapolis, Columbus, and Pittsburgh. Eastern Iowa is also significantly at risk. Large hail and sporadic tornadoes are also likely to pop up in the areas at risk so caution should be taken by everyone in the affected areas." Anyone have any more information on this?

... what kind of information are you looking for? Looks like the standard summer storms are deciding to kick it up a notch, which is something folks have been predicting (fairly accurately, insofar as I'm aware) was going to become a trend for a while now. S'kinda' hurricane season on both coasts right now, and the sort of meteorological phenomena that causes that sort of thing doesn't exactly kindly sit on its arse along the coast. Summer's heavy storm time all throughout the states, usually.

Also I think maybe you mean derecho. Desura seems to be naught but a game distribution platform, heh. E: Caught that. Cooee.

Hurricane season on the West Coast? Is the Earth spinning the other way around in California?

Weather Channel (the Discovery channel of weather...scratch that, the Discovery Channel's seedier, high-strung cousin) is certainly touting a derecho across the upper Midwest and Ohio Valley.

NOAA is a somehwat less sanguine about it. Tornado watches in NE Iowa, southern Wisconsin and NW Illinois.

Hurricane season's actually longer on the west coast, Sheb. Starts in May, ends for both coasts in November. East coast doesn't kick off 'till June. Going by the national hurricane center, anyway. Hot water is hot water, really...

NOAA is a somehwat less sanguine about it. Tornado watches in NE Iowa, southern Wisconsin and NW Illinois.
I'll admit I only half-heartedly pay attention to the weather outside the south-east, but... isn't that kinda' normal for this time of the year? Probably a bit worse than average cause of the general trend of things re: weather, but...

E:Also, pretty awesome map. And I just noticed you can RSS feeds for local(ish) weather. Neato.

Yeah, but with Earht rotation, the hurricane all goes toward Japan and China. I don't actually remember a hurricane hitting the West Coast.

I can't remember a hurricane hitting us either. We get storms, sure, but nothing like a hurricane. We get earthquakes over here instead :P

Every once in a while we'll get the tail end of a storm that went through mexico first, but, yeah, no actual Hurricane level storms hitting California.

I wonder if there's anywhere on Earth where you are at threat from hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes?

New Zealand. They have volcanoes too. Maybe not tornadoes though. But they compensate with tsunamis.

Basically, any spot where you get hurricanes qualifies. Tornado's* and earthquakes can both happen anywhere, though are mostly confined to certain areas.

*Fairly weak ones, I suppose.
