If that does occur, Bachmann would get obliterated statewide.  Franken may not be everyone's favorite senator here, but he's kept his head down and generally has been uncontroversial since taking office.

Bachmann can barely win in the state's most Republican district and poll numbers from 2012 showed her struggling to break 40% statewide against Obama*

*Polls taken in early 2012 when she was still in the running for the Presidential race.

On the negative side, MN-06 has no shortage of wacko Republicans waiting to take her place.

Not really anything worth mentioning. I was tempted to bring up that the person that is suspected to have shot the Department of Corrections Head in Colorado had been shot and killed in Texas, but I decided that no one cares about Colorado to make note of a small development like that.

Oh, and the suspected shooter is a white supremacist. But again, small stuff.

Supreme Court has been hearing arguments about gay marriage. Right now, it's looking like DOMA's days may be numbered. Expected 5-4 split, just remains to be seen which way Anthony Kennedy jumps.

Also, California's Prop 8 ban on same-sex marriage is being considered.

Leeeeetle more complicated than that.

There are two ways to strike down DOMA.

1) Say that homosexuals are a protected class and DOMA is discrimination against them.
This would be the biggest win for gay rights since ever. Essentially makes the Prop 8 case redundant (maybe forces it to be retried even) because the whole level of protection for gay rights is increased it would be near impossible to justify banning gay marriage. It looks like the four liberal justices lean this way.

2) Say that DOMA is an overreach of Federalism by defining marriage - something reserved to the states.
This is where Kennedy looks to be. Not sure who else would sign onto this one, although pretty much everyone is a possibility.

Exactly how that will shake out to any majority decision is anyones guess right now.

Interesting. I thought DOMA essentially *was* #2, that it left it up to the states and allowed states to ban it or legalize it as they choose.

#1 would immediately trigger a slew of new cases to resolve the conflict between Federal protection and state constitutions which have been amended to deny legal recognition to same-sex marriages.

#2 wouldn't change much, except maybe for Federal employees.

#2 Would change a lot because the Federal government would have to recognize state's gay marriage, giving gays acces to a host of federal goodies.

Right now, DOMA says that gay marriage is explicitly illegal on the federal level - all those states that have legalized it? Those marriages are fake.

If they go with number 2, it would also allow the challenging of states denying marriages contestable on the grounds of the full faith and credit clause, though people aren't really getting their hopes up about that just yet. So it might be illegal in a state to get married, but they'd still have to recognize marriages performed in other states (Right now, DOMA seems to overrule that, making it a federal issue).

It would ease the way for gay immigrants to enter the US through marriage. It would provide for federal marriage benefits, which are not trivial. It would provide a lot of guarantees, even when traveling.

It would be a pretty big win, to be honest - though not as big a win as option 1.
