@SG isn't it mostly because of that "hate all the other congresscritters" thing? That and most people not really knowing what the hell their representatives are doing. Between tribalism and ignorance...

E: Ah, and the gerrymandering. Never forget the gerrymandering.

Also, while people loathe Congress as a whole, they usually like their own Congresscritter.

[snip]... the NSA's stuff got blamed on Obama (he's not clear of responsibility, but it's not like he personally oversees them) and therefore all Democrats by association, therefore pushing a certain contingent of moderates to the Republicans when they heard "Those socialist Dems are personally inspectin' every one of your emails!"
... to others, did any of that actually happen? Last I checked the strongest support for the NSA's bullshit was coming from republican sectors. Can't recall any meaningful republican resistance to it.
Not among the "mainstream" Republicans, but it was pretty strong among Tea Party holdouts and libertarian-conservatives, who are still a reasonably big element.

Also, it's a great selling point to independent voters. "Well, yes, I vote consistently to keep these programs running, but you should be taking out your frustration the guy who nominally oversees them... Obama!"

Primary challenges for house seats seem pretty rare/ineffectual, and since most districts have a population that belongs to one party or the other, well, they sure aren't going to vote for the other guy.

El Paso Colorado now represented by guy who thinks demons are possessing everyone. Also transphobic but that part isn't really surprising coming from his ideological background.

It wasn't a close race either. He won with 70% of the vote.

I'd really, really like to give up on the US sometimes. Problem is, I can't afford to move, and everyone who says, "if you don't like it, leave!" won't pony up the cash.

My favorite part is that even the Colorado Springs Gazette, located in the seat of El Paso county, think this is some bullshit.

... So. With this election, Inhofe will likely be chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee. The guy who wrote a book about how global warming was a liberal conspiracy. And that global warming is beneficial.

David Vitter is the ranking member, so he'll probably be chosen for committee chairman, unless he isn't. I'm a little foggy on how committee rules work, but i'm pretty sure it's not based on seniority (again, I could be wrong, it's been a while.)

E: Yeah, party leadership picks out committee chairman, so unless something weird happens it'll probably be David Vitter.

Vitter, like most of Louisiana's politicians, is his own brand of bizarre. Wasn't he the one who got caught with a prostitute a few years back?

I'm still struggling to get my head around this. I can't see why solid Democrat states like Illinois (Chicago for christ's sake!) and Massive Chew Sets have elected Republican governors. What happened?  Surely they can't all be like Chris Christie?

I feel a sense of detachedness from it all of course as a foreigner and leftist. For me American politics is a choice between bad and terrible. Watching the Democrats go down also feels a bit like watching Labour go down - which is a curious sensation indeed, not quite pleasure or satisfaction or even schadenfreude.
