I think the US needs to pass one of the French laws where a party can only accept so much in 'donations'

And deal with the lobby issues, but good luck getting any lobby reforms passed.
I know! How about we lobby for it?
... Oh. wait.

Once again, an intelligence agency appeals to everyone against encryption.
Obviously, if you are not a violent criminal, terrorist or pedophile... you should be fine with us acquiring your information without your knowledge. /s
Law enforcement needs to remember what warrants are for, I guess.

Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Silly baug, wharf rats are for feeding cats. Cops haven't forgotten that.

They have forgotten the number four, but we seem to try not to bring attention to that terrible mental deformity. Too much focus on the number two, I guess.

They're also playing a little loose with the number six. I think it's about time for a remedial course.

Ehh. As long as it takes an actual person to break your encryption (instead of a computer automatically collecting all your data), its still tons better in terms of reliability and security.

Relevant to that:
That just reinforces my temptation to select the 'other' box, and put in, 'Human', as well as help reinforce only having two criteria for speaking to someone:
Are they human?
How much is my introversion biting into my will to meet people today?

Non-relevant:
I have determined my voting strategy:
Vote for whoever is not of the incumbent, or who is within the previous incumbent's party.  Current government isn't doing too good, so let's try to get as many new people in as it is possible.

Well... that was certainly interesting, I guess. I mean, I sure agree with the "Racism contributes to shitty things for the "privileged" groups, too" argument, but the author here has a weird way of going about establishing it. For starters, attempting to define "white" as a non-racial category on the basis that it's inconsistently applied is pretty strange; bigots have never been the most consistent of people. Irish people can get "promoted" to white because it's an arbitrary category with a known element of No True Scotsman to it, for instance.

There also seems to be a big drive toward establishing a historical conspiracy to split the lower class, which is unnecessary to explain the current state of things, and a pretty big claim to assert without reliable sources. Xenophobia has pretty long-established roots in history, and seizing on things like ancestry for it doesn't exactly require some scheming aristocrat to spur it onward. Personally, I prefer to accept that people with apparently-reasonable ideals and an ordinary amount of self-interest can do some pretty horrible things - that history doesn't need villains.

I dunno - it just seems like a childish attempt to dress up a fairly reasonable argument in all sorts of flashy historical revision and dramatic paradigm shifts just to get people excited about it. All I see that doing is getting it shot down by people who think arguments like the one I made above imply that everything in the article is garbage. Something a lot more convincing could be mustered with an emphasis on things like the suicide rate that are straightforward facts (presumably), and a good bibliography.

I haven't actually looked at the candidates locally but yeah, this DeMaio (sp?) person seems sucky, also haven't seen any attack ads for his opponent. Sexual harassment scandal that is going on with him nonwithstanding.

Maybe some of the San Diego locals here can give some insight.

In general though, I agree that the current government isn't doing very well and that many have been in office too long. I would prefer not voting any republicans given how they've been the last decade and a half, but at the same time, I don't want to narrow myself into democrat too much.

I do vote Green Party if I can't really decide or don't like either choice sometimes.

Former presidential speechwriter calls for the South to secede and form a country called "Reagan".
That's funny, last time somebody wanted to rename a geographic region Reagan it was California. Also, odd choice of starting states for your Christian theocracy. Georgia works, I guess, so long as you crush Atlanta into the ground and expel its people, but South Carolina has a sharply rising black population and Florida is actually fairly centre.

According to Wikipedia, the proportion of South Carolina's population that's black has been falling for over a century. (Most of the drop was in the Great Migration, but white migration from the North has played a role in recent decades.)

Huh. Regardless, the Democrats are doing better in SC now than they have since the fall of the Dixiecrats. I assumed the black population was driving this, but apparently not.
