And yet... for all that, the Empire was pretty damn well off, from what I can recall. More peaceful than not, relatively high standard of living, plenty of scientific and cultural development. Definitely some nastiness, but considering the scale of things he was probably doing better than the US is. General state of things actually got worse after the Empire toppled and better when Palps assembled the whole thing.
Many of those were also hallmarks of the Old Republic. Yes, there were plenty of wars in the galaxy's history but there were still long periods of general peace (the damn thing survived 20,000 years, more or less), and the standard of living in most places was much higher than anything on Earth.

Then the Empire came along, and so did state-sanctioned slavery (Wookies were enslaved in vast numbers to help build the first Death Star, for one example) and genocide (the Caamasi (though the Bothans helped) and the Firrerreo, two examples I can name off the top of my head). I don't care how inefficient the Old Republic was, the Empire is not a regime I would like to be a part of.

But what if Jeb is the Palpatine to George's Vader? I don't want to see the results of Jeb with executive powers..

Jeb is going to have to find someone uglier than Cheney to be his VP for that to be his palpatine (not that Jeb Bush is ugly or anything). lol

Make no mistake, as emperor, Palpatine is a dictator--but a relatively benign one, like Pinochet.

Seriously, Augusta 'Deathsquad' Pinochet? Who had over 30,000 people tortured? That's your exemple of a benign dictator? I'd take Lukashenko over Pinochet any day (plus you get  better tractors).

Uhm, given the excesses of the Empire at various points (Genocides, destroying planets, mass enslavement...), Pinochet might be a better match.

Well, he wasn't a communist, so he was benign from US perspective at least.

I don't dispute that, I dispute that Pinochet was "relatively benign". Well, relative to Hitler maybe.

Does anyone have a picture of Luke Skywalker as a Che Guevara shirt?

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Biden is being a gaffe machine again. While he is technically telling the truth, still kind of damaging diplomatically.

As one of the three people to support Biden in the 2008 primaries I intend to support him again in 2016.
