Cali's got roughly the same amount of old people (lower percentile of the population, but nearly double the total population) -- possibly more, really -- and around half the tax spending. Seriously. There's something more than "It's the old people" going on with Florida. And then you've got joints like Texas that's got more spending than cali despite a younger and smaller population (and hey, even less military spending going by what Sho linked).

The thing with Florida is probably to do with it being mostly a construction-based economy. Seriously, they have nothing there but houses and tourism, or nothing that begins to approach that. Upper Florida might be a different situation, but it's more akin to Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia with low population densities.

Now, I don't know how construction could affect it like this, but that's the real noticeable difference between Florida and most of the other states.


Actually, I just took a look into where they got their stats, and I'm... confused. On page 10, you have the Current-Dollar GDP by State. The Southeast is actually the region that contributes the most towards GDP (22.4%, compared to the next highest, the Far West which contributes 18.4% of the total), and the highest of those is Florida, who contributes 5% of the nation's GDP all by its lonesome (which isn't that much compared to the real heavy-hitters).
So... with that and the originally linked stuff in mind, is it basically being stated that the Southeast is just really inefficient with money, and could be contributing way more?

Unlike Steeled, who is being so kind, thoughtful, and polite.  I particularly liked the part about wishing death upon everyone who lives in California, including me and also a lot of Republicans, apparently on the grounds that equal rights are anti-freedom.
