Well, first of all what happened is a couple of food industry consultant applied for the right of statingsomething. It' not like the EFSA went out of his way to ban it, they were asked and they had to answer, yes or no.

Now, here's the PDF with the decision (good thing about Europe is that they do put a lot of stuff online). It was actually rejected on a technicality, they didn't evaluate the truth of the claim. Wich explain why they do agree that water hydrate in other opinions (that I've linked earlier). (If I understand it correctly, the messed up disease and risks factor for the disease in their application.)

So yeah, the bloody telegraph making a fool of itself again. If a murderer got off on procedural grounds, they'd probably claim the EU made it legal to kill people.

Problem isn't the ruling itself, it's that it makes the EU look like a bunch of unrelatable pedantic technocrats who don't care about any real problems. It's stuff like that that estranges the citizens from the European idea and gives populists ammunition to blame Brussels for pretty much everything. (That's basically the stuff we regularly talk about in the Eurothread.)

Max:

You really should look into why we created the truth in advertising laws.  We had SERIOUS problems with outright snake oil literally claiming to cure what ails you, while actually being toxic shoe polish, being sold.

Sheb:

I get that-- Sounds like getting news about something from a Fox affiliate.

Or even worse, making things up. This one is pretty old (10 years ago, or more, IIRC) but a few British journalist in a pub decided to start the rumor that the EU was going to force fishermen in trailers to wear hairnets. Not unsurprisingly, the British press fell for it.

I heard that those fascists in Brussels are going to ban alcohol as a public nuisance and make all of our pubs serve tomato juice imported from Algeriaistan instead! (Are you buying it? Am I European now?)

Actually, I heard that (Flemmish) belgians wanted to pass legislation forbidding the consumption of wine at dinner by minors, while lowering the drinking age for beer, but that it never managed to get off the floor as the other (french) belgians began beating them to death with stale pastry.

You are obviously out of your mind, as everybody knows that Belgium has neither laws nor a government to pass them.

Please, back up off me with that socialist rag, you plebeian. I bet you even believe there isn't a secret agreement between France and Germany to execute the Queen and hand Britain over to foreigners if we stay in the EU even one year longer.

Seems like something that could happen. Well, save for the fact that the Walloons aren't all that about Wine either. Quite a lot of beer is made there, after all.

I tried to go for something that combined both "No, thats just dumb!" with "Wait-- maybe..."

Glad to see it was at least partially successful. :D

It's not that unrealistic.
In Germany they raised the ages for drinking and smoking from 16 to 18 recently. Poor youth.
They also banned smoking in bars, which complicates my private life enormously (at least in winter).
And now some conservative bigots want to legally require prostitutes to be at least 21.
Goddamn eurofascists regulating all the fun out of life...  :P

You COULD live "Here", where you cannot buy alcohol until you are 21, where giving alcohol to somebody below that age is a felony, where prostitution is illegal in all but 2 or 3 states, and where there are still some nasty lingering features of prohibition, like not being able to buy alcohol after midnight, or on sundays, regardless of age. (depending on the state.)

Prostitution is only legal in one state, that being Nevada.
