I don't fully understand how this is happening  - don't budget bills have to originate in the House?
Yeah, but the tradition for the past couple years now has been to let the Senate do it, presumably because that's the only way to get the votes in the House (having Senate GOP say "this is OK"). Or something like that.

Besides, I'm not entirely confident this compromise is purely a "budget bill".

They released the final version of the bill being voted on in the Senate, if you feel like reading 35 pages of legalese minutiae, which I don't have the concentration to do at the moment (coffee brewing). It's the last link in the above stub, or just click here (PDF).

Senate vote live.
Excellent! Thanks. Maybe I'll skip the coffee for cheap beer and a novelty hat...

I will say your Senate is a lot more commoner friendly than some others. A lot less lawyer speak so far than I'm used to, although they still have some time to get a little more ambage.

That's usually handled by the language in the bills.

Less lawyer speak means more opportunity to melodrama things up, though. Notice with the live feed: they could scatter those groups a little more widely through the room, make walking and hearing easier, but 6'll get you 10 they know exactly where the cameras are. Cluster in and ham it up, boys and girls.

The bill goes to the house now, I think.

The House hasn't voted yet, so it's still technically in limbo.  Nobody's heard from Speaker Boehner in hours.  Rumors that he locked himself in his office minutes before a single gunshot was heard within are probably exaggerated.

Realistically speaking though, there's no 100% guarantee that the bill is actually going to pass, because it's not impossible that any two or three of the eighteen Republican House members needed to put the vote over the top (with the Democrats' vote) won't buckle under the threats from their right at the last minute.

Mr president, isn't this going to happen again in a few months?
... No.
A few months later.
I'm sure we can come together to end this shutdown.

Here I was, all ready to shout, "The end is too damn nigh!", but then they went and came to a half-assed resolution that doesn't really solve anything but makes the catastrophe a bit less imminent. Ah well, it's for the best. Assuming it works.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

There's a caveat here: if the House doesn't pass the Senate's bill, then nothing more can happen, because the Senate is on vacation. Wouldn't be surprised if this empowers the Tea Party to blow up the train just before it comes out of the tunnel.

Just saw that. If the Tea Partiers are feeling particularly suicidal, they could indeed Cruz missile the hell out of the bill. I doubt even they are that stupid, though.

Also, there's gotta be provisions for dragging Senators back in early. Right?
