Etrian Odyssey is a series of oldschool first-person dungeon crawl RPGs with a nasty difficulty curve, requires you to draw your own maps (or get lost, which you can do too, I guess...) and is generally unforgiving and cruel*. The story on the first was actually rather interesting, I thought. The rest are... eh.

Beautiful sprite art on the first three. The 3DS one uses 3D models though and loses a lot of charm in my opinion.

I might have to pick up Unchained, because of you guys...

*I believe it was the first game that had this... one of the most important items you'll have in your inventory is something that can instantly pull you out of the dungeon back to the safety of town, purchasable for a pittance each. In at least 4 different places, you'll have an box pop up asking if you want to try and play with a little squirrel-like animal. If you agree, it steals your escape item. And it never rewards you for being a sucker each time, unlike a lot of other games would.

That's why you should ALWAYS stock 2 :P

Also, damn you crayfish!

I gotta finish Etrian and Unchained but this year pumps out good games on the 3ds.  I did beat fire emblem and OOT though.  I also just got SMT IV and its pretty great.  Used half my free eshop cash to get Attack of the Friday Monsters (glorious but maybe not for everyone) and GBC Shantae which is fantastic given I hate platformers and I actually like it.  I may use more of the eshop cash to get Shantae 2 Risky's revenge if I finish the first.

Also mildly annoyed that River City Ransom is out in Europe but not in the US yet, but I guess they gotta throw Europe a bone every so often, they didn't even get Unchained Blades.

Meh. When you stock two, you end up going "Oh hey, I forgot to buy another thread this time. Meh, I have an extra." *two hours later* "...I forgot twice in a row, didn't I."

I kept picking up the crayfish in the desperate hope that it wasn't just a more merciful version of the squirrel. I'll be kind of disappointed if the crayfish (which, incidentally, is the same crayfish each time you find it...) doesn't come back to beat your head in for constantly annoying it later on. =P

All the Atlus RPGs are good, Animal Crossing feels too slow for me but it's still able to keep me enthralled.

Maybe I'm just totally going about this the wrong way, but Unchained feels even grindier than the original EO...

Mixed feelings regarding the auto-mapping, but I can picture it being met with approval by a lot of people.

3 had auto-mapping, I think. The tiles would appear in places you'd step, though you could place "I can walk here" tiles without traversing the dungeon. Useful, especially when you're already bleeding and there's a FOE on your tail.

I like 4, 3 felt... better, to me. Somehow.

It only places floor tiles, not walls or anything else, so you still need to properly map it all.

As I recall, and it's been a while, all of them automapped the tiles you stepped on with the generic 'floor' color. And I agree; 3 is better than 4. (And the original had the best story.)

Good lord, so far, I've spent over half my playtime grinding to get past a specific required room in the first real dungeon. >< (Unchained)

I knew it was eventually going to happen, my buddy from gamestop said they haven't received any stock or heard from anything at corp so XSEED must had put it on hold, AGAIN.

Dudes, ATLUS's parent company is going under or at least downsizing, from what I've heard. Nintendo is all over them though.
