looking for great RPG
« on: February 05, 2013, 05:29:02 am »

Hello guys,

I'm looking for a truly great RPG. A game where I can sink hundreds of hours in and where I can really identify with my character and emerge in the lore. Maybe the game I always hoped Skyrim to be.

Some more guidelines:
- open-world (or at least non-linear)
- graphic doesn't matter
- indie or triple-A, release year doesn't matter

Some RPGs I loved: Morrowind, Baldur's Gate II, Terraria, Star Wars: KOTOR.

I know it's kind of a difficult request, and I'll be grateful for every contribution.

And I think some of you will really enjoy promoting your favourite RPG.  :P

Get a group of friends and play some pen and paper DnD.
It is incredibly fun somehow.
And things can get chaotic, if your Dungeon Master is creative.
EDIT: Or you could play morrowind again, because we all know it would be worth it. :P
EDIT 2: OHHH! Did you play Daggerfall yet?
Check the free games list for it.

Yikes are truely great RPGs that are open world rare. "Sandbox" tends to be the kiss of death mostly because they are always done with the sacrifice of gameplay.

But let me see...

-The Ultima series starting from 4-7 are great (with 8 being rocky and unfinished and 9 being the dreadful beyond all reason)
-Jagged Alliance 2 is technically an open world game. It doesn't really have much of a story and lacks a few VERY nessisary details... and GoG doesn't have 1.13.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R., one of the few games to do open-world correctly.

You could try those masterpieces too :
Fallout
Fallout 2
(both Fallout games have many mods)
Arcanum
(get the unofficial patch that fixed tons of unresolved problems after the last official patch)

they all can be found for cheap on Good Old Games.

I'll second that, I recommend Shadow of Chernobyl. I haven't played the others, but after reading about the series I think the general opinion, at least on Bay12 is that the other games were lacking in areas Shadow of Chernobyl wasn't.

No I haven't. I've heard Daggerfall is awefully buggy, isn't it?

Ultima sounds great, which one should I play?

Oh yes I've played STALKER, and am very fond of it!

Arcanum
(get the unofficial patch that fixed tons of unresolved problems after the last official patch)

Arcanum looks very similar to Baldur's Gate, is it?

The easiest to get into would be 7 as it is by far the most streamlined.

Yet don't let how most games use sequels. The Ultima series actually has continuity to the extent that things you learn in one game can often be used in another (or for the entire series). I'd consider starting from the start, HECK starting from 1.

It is also a series that actually makes the instruction manual useful.

Quest for Glory 1-5 also are non-linear games (and one of the few RPG Adventure games). The issue is that their adventure aspects are really hard. If you go down this route try to use the remakes of 1 and ESPECIALLY 2.

The Daggerfall on the free games list hasn't really been buggy for me.
Be warned though, it is far more difficult than Morrowind ever was for me.
And the controls are iffy, but you can play the whole thing with just a mouse.

When patched Daggerfall is not that buggy anymore, i managed to complete it twice in the past.
It was the original release that was very buggy.
And i imagine with some unofficial patches it must be even more stable, though i didn't played with them.

Yes, it has a few similarities in the gameplay.

Arcanum is pretty much the definition of a flawed gem. It's got some great environments, characters and an awesome setting. However the UI is most
clunky, the combat is completely broken (harm, anyone?) and the game can range from brutally punishing to a piece of cake depending on choice of character build.
It is worth it to play though. It's one of those many RPGs that if they had more time/budget the game would truly plant itself as a masterpiece. Right now it stands as a classic RPG which you'll spend a lot of your time yearning for some mechanics that modern RPGs take for granted.

These stupid thugs. I accidently spent enough cash that I cannot get by them and I don't want to do their dirty work either.

So I ended up needing to grind off of wolves which is rather unsatisfying.

Might and magic 7 comes to mind.
recently played through it again.
IMO the Best Might and Magic title out there. I have never got 9 and 10 to run, though.

The only thing you need to get past the thugs in the mining village is a single point in persuation - or just a bit of fist versus wood pile action. you get 200 gold to boot. It is not a flaw of the game if it makes you choose between your values and an easy path.
