-Jagged Alliance 2 is technically an open world game. It doesn't really have much of a story and lacks a few VERY nessisary details... and GoG doesn't have 1.13.

I need to chime in here because I'm not you're aware that 1.13 is a modification...  and it's a fantastic one to boot.  GoG, of course, can't sell the modders' work.

I don't know if I can install it with GoG's thing which is the issue.

Keep an eye on Age of Decadence.  Judging from the demo, it's gonna be rather excellent when it finally releases.

You can.  Why on earth would you assume you couldn't?

Well for one, installing the update caused my Jagged Alliance to become... unplayable.

binkw32.dll is missing from my computer. Yay -_-

It might be worth trying a fresh install then.  It worked for me.

My roommate is a big fan of the Gothic and Risen series, although apparently the quality varies wildly between the games.

Here's a fix: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/105987-25-what-binkw32-missing

Doesn't work. Jagged Alliance cannot be played for me at 1.13 hense why I do not recommend it from GoG if I, myself, cannot get it working.

Hmmm I may have found a solution, I just hope it doesn't need another reinstall because this is getting tedius.

Nehrim (Oblivion full conversion mod, technically a wholly different game in a different world) and Divine Divinity come to mind as "recently played and not too bad" RPG's. It's really a shame I got a bit sick of the genre after Skyrim.

Fixed and I will say... it is no exageration that the 1.13 patch/mod is a drastic "improvement".

Not 1.13 Jagged Alliance 2 has a lot of things you have to power through.

Mount & Blade. The original one. Mount & Blade Warband also, but a bit less heartily recommended.

Also, try the The Last Days of the Third Age mod for the original M&B. It sets the game in Middle Earth during the War for the Ring. It's quite fun to play.

I've never played the original.  What does it do better?

Geneforge. I mean, maybe it's not THAT open world, but I wouldn't exactly call it Linear either. And an awesome, awesome game. Amazing lore and world, especially. I've played through the first 2 or 3 times now.

The other Spiderweb Software games like Avernum are pretty good as well.

It has a side slash I miss a lot...

Well, not all that much, really. I just preffer it for some reason. I'm sure I'll find some reasons why I dislike Warband later on, but right now I can't think of any others than the incredibly biast, unprofessional and banal reason of it not working as well on my computer as the original.
