It is when it feels artificial.

Similar to games where a character tries to get an object, but it is out of reach... yet would easily be in reach if they leaned over, reached, or used any sort of object to get a bit more height.

It just makes me feel like my character is too lazy to find another solution rather then there just being no other solution then to destroy that wood.

You can always pay them, then come back later when you're better equiped/stronger/more companions and get back your money, and whatever you'll find on their corpses.

If you can get through the wolf maze.

I had the same problem in the first town in Arcanum. I ended up save/reloading like 20 times before I finally got a lucky chance where I was able to kill all of them using a bomb.

Then I read the walkthrough for that part and face-palmed myself.  There was a way to easily pass that part but you only get one shot at it and if you choose a different option it is lost forever... I can't remember what it was though....

But for great open RPG's (someone mentioned Ultima 7 already - my all time favorite) I would recommend Ultima Underworld too.  The technology for its time was truly mindblowing.  Explore various levels of an underworld with its various inhabitants and secrets.  It's not linear and doesnt force you down a path but the game is not random, but if you have never played it before it is definitely worth a playthrough.

Never been there, as usually i always grind a bit in the crash area, and deal with the bandits after recruiting the ogre in the tavern to help .

I will have to try that wolf maze, where is it located ?

An alternative is to have some pickpocket skill (and probably a bit of dexterity), so you can just walk close to the thugh leader and take his key without him noticing.
From there, you run past the gate, they will not even notice ;)

Arcanum - A great game but the combat varies between being totally impossible and easy as cake. For example i have a Dwarf Technologist. Before he got his Elephant hunting rifle the game was a grind... but with the rifle i just swagger from battle to battle and kill everything in 1 or 2 shots... even a freaking incorporeal !FIRE ELEMENTAL! (it didn't even have time to move).

Otherwise it has everything you'd want from a RPG game. Large world, crafting ETC.

Seconding the Ultima series. I enjoyed 4-7. 1-3 are a bit too dated for me, 8 is a pretty big departure from the rest but still enjoyable, and 9 is a bit of a mess. You can pick up 4 for free on various sites, including gog.com. They also has the rest of them relatively cheap.

There are some great fan remakes of the Ultima games too. Ultima 5 Lazarus is a good remake of Ultima 5, and the Ultima 6 Project just released their final version a couple of days ago. They're both total conversions of the Dungeon Siege game (which isn't so great, but worth getting for these fan projects). You can pick up DS 1 for $4.99 from Amazon as a digital download.

If graphics are not important, there's still Darklands (dosbox can run it very well) that even after all those years has lot of good in term of open world and freeform.
Every time i replay it i'm amazed by how the atmosphere is still brillant after all that time.

You know how there is quick map near the crash site? If you keep going (well the other way) you will hit a maze filled with wolves.

I just installed Darklands yesterday and is on my to-play list.  I've heard great things about it but somehow I missed this game back in the day.  Will definitely checked it out.  I heard its also one of the very few RPGs that are historically solid as well.  Takes place in Germany I think?

-Jagged Alliance 2 is technically an open world game. It doesn't really have much of a story and lacks a few VERY nessisary details... and GoG doesn't have 1.13.

I need to chime in here because I'm not you're aware that 1.13 is a modification...  and it's a fantastic one to boot.  GoG, of course, can't sell the modders' work.
