A return.
« on: February 05, 2013, 01:23:47 am »

It's been at least a year since I've played DF. Killed my laptop quite some time ago by spilling a drink on it. FPS death came far too quickly on the work PC and I've been using a mac since, which I've never been able to get DF to run on. Until two days ago. I've now gotten my second fortress up and running after forgetting to bring an axe to my first embark. Or any wood. And no caravans were coming. Ever. And all of my animals were running around the lunch table trying to kill each other and anyone who came near.
Re-embarked. Made it through my first winter with only a couple deaths, all immigrants and livestock. Who were once again fighting around the tables. They've thinned down to fairly docile creatures after I just slaughtered the enraged ones. One day I'll check the wiki and figure out how to stop that. Right now I'm trying to remember how a military is supposed to work before I get besieged by gobbos. Had my first ASCII dream in a long time last night. Looking forward to playing with minecarts.

Let's get dorfy.

Livestock fight when you cram too many of them into a small space. Try assigning some to pastures (under the (i)zone menu IIRC) to spread them out a little bit.

Also you might be happy to know that DFHack now supports macs. Just head to the main DFHack thread and there is a download link there.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Once you get around minecarts, I suggest checking out the "dwarven shotgun" design.

This probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind in such a situation, but can't you chop wood with wooden axes, which you can make after dismantling your wagon?

I've never tried it myself though  :-X

Blue Dwarf has been happy lately. He did some !!science!! recently. He admired a fine forum post lately. He was enraged by a forum troll recently. He was upset by the delayed release of the new version of Dwarf Fortress lately. He took joy in planning a noble's death recently.

That totally works, you can make wooden axes from the wagon, no problem. :)

 :o

Are you saying that... training axes can be used to chop wood, or that modded wooden weapons can do the job?  Because the former would be surprising.  The latter... not so much.
