How can one harvest seeds from the land?
« on: February 04, 2013, 05:20:21 pm »

I'm using a modded race that doesn't allow you to bring seeds along at embark.
Anyone know what to do?
Also, trading confuses the SHIT outta me.

You can't gather seeds directly, you've got to gather the fruit and get the seeds that way.  Make some herablists by enabling the plant gathering labor, then designate plant gethering orders (d->p).  Keep in mind that harvesting plants isn't always successful, so you're gonna want to designate a large area for gathering.

Initially, you can only get surface crops this way, but once you get down to the caverns you can harvest subterranean plants. Keep in mind that you modded race might not be able to eat plants, you may discover that you're using a carnivorous race (kobolds, for example, can't eat plants).

Brewng any of those plants, or eating them raw should create the seeds. Be aware that cooking destroy the seeds.

Other activities that produce seeds are milling and threshing.

Milling longland grass, paradoxically produces both longland flour, and grass seeds; also applicable to whips, for whip flour and whip vine seeds, and the dyestuff herbs like ratweed and bladeweed. Threshing ropereeds at the farmers workshop to get ropereed fiber thread will also produce ropereed seeds.

All berry types need to be brewed to get seeds. Cooking in the kitchen destroys seeds.

Getting seeds from produce is helpful, if for instance, elves refuse to bring bags of seeds and only want to bring produce. This is sometimes the only way to get whipvines or sunberries. (Currently, NOBODY gets sunberries or sliver barbs without modified raws. It's a known bug.)

Be mindful of the 200 seeds limit for each type of crop. For very large fortresses, this places a hard cap on how many plump helmets can be planted each season, and forces you to kill adorable puppies and the like to make up the food deficit, but compared to prior game releases, this one is absurdly easy to stay fed in.  Just be aware that there is a 200 seed per type restriction. It will make you more mindful on deciding weather to make elf-friendly rocknut soap, or fabulously expensive quary bush roasts.

I'm pretty sure the elves brought Sunberries last season in my game.

Ok, it looks like the bug was resolved.

I still haven't seen elves carrying sunberries for a very long time though.  It is probably because of my preferences for them to be in savage biomes instead though.  (It's a tough choice, weather you want domesticated giant creatures, or sunshine.....)

I get lots of sunberries from the elves but I also found them at my embark area in a good biome. Maybe that's related. I don't get sliver barb.

Sliver barb only grows in [EVIL] biomes, and traders won't stock it unless the merchant civ lives on that biome type. Elves never start on evil biomes, nor do humans, so it would need to be a *very* late worldgen for elves to bring both sliver barb and sunberry on the same caravan, and even then I don't really know if that would work. More likely to see humans bring sliver barb than elves, IIRC. If you somehow get friendly gobbos from worldgen, they will be the very most likely to stock sliver barb. I have never been so "blessed" to have a gobbo caravan show up in winter though, and am not even sure they are capable of it in the current release. If you want sliver barb, usually you have to embark on an evil biome yourself, hopefully adjacent to a savage normal biome, then rely on humans and elves to bring you sunberries, fisher berries, longland grass, and ropereeds.
