Well, alright. This one's real, little one, so listen closely. It was a long time ago; when men traveled the stars, when the word Honor still meant something.
This is the Ballad of the Stars.

The IC Thread

It's the year 3013, and Earth is but a distant memory, lost to the tainted scourge known in common parlance as "oni." In a universe far away, intrepid crews travel from one planet to the next in search of honor and fortune, under (or out of, as the case sometimes may be) the watchful eyes of the Imperial Starfleet. Following a period of instability, the code of Bushido has made a stark resurgence among even the lowest ranks of the citizenry. Soldiers are trained in Iaijutsu, Kenjutsu, the awkwardly named Gunkata. Through a neural interface two pilots, each necessarily diametrically opposed to one another, ensure their ship's safety. Shamans, priests, and the odd lone practitioner truck with spirits to enact works of great arcane might. Politicians and scoundrels truck with one another to enact works of credit.

You are a member of a small crew, on a small ship as it travels the stars. Smugglers, mercenaries, soldiers, or adventurers. While the purpose of your ship will be decided by the Captain, your personal goals are your own.

Actions will be decided using a heavily modified version of Legends of the Five Rings 4th Edition Rules. You are not expected to know or have access to these rules. The basic function is as follows: Your stats and skills, plus gear, add up to form a pool of d10s. You keep the highest of these rolls, based on your attribute score. 10s explode (So a roll of 10 is rerolled to a 3, and thus counts as 13). I'll give your character sheets to you, and rolls will be shown in posts.

The Ship
The ship acts as both a setting and, when piloted or otherwise utilized for rolls, a piece of equipment.
The ship has four stats, each of which can be mapped, roughly, to the first four "rings" that a regular human character has.

Tonnage - (Earth) The ship's bulk. How much it can hold, and how many hits it can take.
Tactical - (Fire) The ship's weaponry reaction time and basic combat ability.
Sensors - (Air) The ship's sensors and on board computing power.
Propulsion - (Water) The ship's speed and maneuverability.

These stats are affected by the ship's hardware, engine, and so on. While the captain, or anyone else, can easily examine the ship's logs to get a basic idea of the ship's load-out, hard numbers can only be seen by someone with the relevant skills. Upgrades can be purchased, and, given that the ship starts out as a hunk of scrap, probably should be.

Spoiler: On Pilots (click to show/hide)

Thanks to studies in the early 21st century it was found that not only is the human mind able to pilot a craft through the power of projected thought alone, but that two minds are, in fact, better than one. Thus, through Willpower and personal Awareness alone, a ship is directed to safety by its duo of pilots.
Still, in the 31st century, neuroscience has quite a ways to go, and the current belief among the Scientific community is that, for optimal efficiency, these minds should be as different from one another as they can possibly be, so that one mind may cover for another's faults. These beliefs, superstitious or true, have had the net effect of causing many Captains to encourage enmity between their pilots (making for an all around unpleasant voyage for many a crew), and causing many pilots to lay vehement blame upon their partner's feet for even the slightest mistake.

Thanks to the relatively recent advent of warp drives, it takes only a week for a small sized ship to travel the distance between Earth and Mars (or approximately 54.6million km), however during travel- be it in warp space or realspace- the pilots are locked into the grid, so to speak, and unable to do much more than pilot and converse with the rest of the crew.
Pilots utilize the Sailing skill and (Piloting) emphases, and the highest out of their Awareness and Willpower stats. Should both pilots utilize the same stat, the average of their rolls will be utilized. However, if both pilots use different stats, their rolls will be added together. There may be some truth to the superstition after all.

If the ship were a living thing, Engineers would be no different than a medic. Capable of repairing mechanics of varying stripes, upgrading and outfitting ships, sealing hull breeches, and bringing damaged components back online, the job of an Engineer is both of great importance, and of great risk. Many an honorable samurai have lost their lives ensuring the ship's continued function.

The ship is treated as having Wound Ranks akin to any other character. However, when these ranks are filled, rather than take negative modifiers, varying components of that ship are sent offline. Offline components do not provide their bonuses to a ship's stats, and as blast doors close off sections of the ship to prevent a vacuum killing the crew, hyperdrives spark and fail, viewports shatter, and torpedo launchers crumple, a crew without an Engineer may soon find themselves trapped in a single room on a much larger, but very much inert, hunk of metal.
The difficulty of the extended roll to repair these components are based on the complexity of the component (which also decides the difficulty of installing them as an upgrade) and the damage dealt that brought them to that point.

As the famed shugenja roboticist Kimoku Aya once noted, the kami, creatures of indelible honor subject to their own laws, often function similar to robots when provided with the right stimulii. This is how, ostensibly, magic functions. Reading prayers, pleas, and commands from cipher-written scrolls, a mage enacts a ritual, short or long, which calls upon these elemental forces to perform wondrous acts.

Each Mage has an Affinity for one specific style of elemental spell, often decided by their Starsign, of which they have an easier time casting. Many, though not all, have Deficiencies as well- An element which they find more difficult to draw upon than any other.
Though the void has no kami, the rare mage or two is able to call upon that "element" as well. Though scrolls containing such spells are exceptionally rare.

Dishonorable, not the least because of its association with Oni and Taint, is Blood Magic or Maho. Rumors abound of horrible mages calling upon such dark forces, and horrid as they may be, many an unscrupulous magi seeks such spells out for their own use.

The taint, a spiritual and physical sickness brought about by dark magics and dark gods, once nearly wiped humanity out of existence. The Milkyway Galaxy, it is said, contains planets full of such horrors, though being lost to any modern starcharts, the veracity of these claims are a scholarly debate at best.

When one casts maho, or deals with Oni or the tainted lands they rule in any way, even to combat them, there is a risk that they will become tainted- Touched by the Dark Gods of Jigoku, their mind, body, and soul indelibly stained.
Once tainted, there is no known cure, and the risk that they will spread their taint to another- or worse, enact their new master's will- is such that many a tainted samurai is slain on sight, if they do not commit seppuku upon learning of this grave dishonor. Once tainted, also, a person must constantly resist the darkness within themselves, lest that taint grow to consume them completely.

Until the first full rank of taint, a character's tainted status is undetectable. By the second rank, the character has begun to gain dark powers related to the Oni Taint, and their body has begun to warp and mutate as well. Eventually, they become Lost- Body and mind completely consumed, their soul forfeit to Jigoku upon their death.

It is said that Jade not only might protect one from the taint, but also harm those who are infected with it, as well oni and other creatures of the corrupted Shadowlands. While this has proven to be true, whether this property is unique to jade items is hard to say. There may be other materials out there, with similar effects.

When in battle, initiative is rolled and characters are given a variety of options on their respective turns.
They may do as follows:
1) Pick one: Attack (Including attempting a more complex combat maneuver, such as a called shot, knockdown, disarm, or so on), Cast, Activate a Kiho, or Use a Skill. And Move up to five times their water ring, drop a weapon, spend a void point to activate a kiho, or draw a small weapon.
2) Pick two: Draw a Weapon, Guard Someone, Execute a Kata, Activate a Kiho, or Move up to 10x their Water Ring, or speak more than five words. And Move up to Five times their water ring, drop a weapon, spend a void point to activate a kiho, or draw a small weapon.

In addition, at the beginning of each of their turns they may shift stances. The stances are as follows:
Full Attack - The character may only attack and move closer to their enemy, and they become an easier target to hit. However, they also find it easier to strike their opponent.
Attack - The standard combat stance, which provides no benefits or disadvantages.
Defense - While the character may not attack in this stance, they are able to perform any other kind of action. They also become more difficult to hit.
Full Defense - In this stance, a character may only move up to five times their water ring, drop a weapon, or draw a small weapon. However, they become far more difficult to hit.
Center - While in this stance, the character takes no actions, instead focusing on the task at hand. On the next round, they immediately shift out of this stance, gaining a temporary boost to their initiative score and finding one task of their choice to be far easier than it was before.

Characters have wound ranks. As these ranks are filled, they begin to take penalties to all rolls they make, until, eventually, they are struck down or healed.

The ancient art form of Iaijutsu is considered both sacred and of grave import to those involved. It may be performed with a katana and/or wakizashi, or a pistol. Pistols, being an honorable weapon, oft come in quick-draw holsters for use in Iaijutsu techniques, and have a blunted metal attachment to the foregrip for use in parrying blows.

Duels take place over three rounds-
In the first, the combatants assess one another. During this time, if either decides they are outmatched, they may concede defeat.
In the second, both combatants focus on the task at hand, preparing to strike.
Finally, the duelists strike. Should the duel be to the death, and both duelists are still standing at this point, then the duel continues as a regular skirmish would.

Background: He is somewhat reserved, with a calm demeanor. He is quite absentminded. He is an accomplished scientist in both physics and chemistry, with several doctorates. He has a desire to find ancient information, and works tirelessly to gain the knowledge required to create biomechanical life. He often seems aloof, and isn't much for diplomacy or social skills. He used to be a lab researcher on Maralon V, after graduating from tactical space school in the orbit of the planet..He has a dry sense of humor, to the point where no one often gets his jokes. Description: She is a short but skinny thing, looked to have developed in space save for the dark tan and calloused hands. A planet sider, she has a muscular build, or sinewy may be more accurate, and black brown hair, depending on the light really.
Background: A planetsider turned shipside when the cash ran sour, Leera doesn't fit with the general crowd of the vessel because of her vivacious attitude and tendency to put her foot in her mouth. She became a mage at a young age due to her family and joining the medical field was frowned upon, but accepted. Her excuse at the time was, there just isn't any money in hexes and ritual, but really she just wanted new surroundings and to see what else is out there. Her medical skills are good but not great, and she will often fill in the gaps in he medicinal knowledge with that of the occult. With one foot in the spirit world in her private time she finds it difficult to work under her own supervision, often exploring the aether of her mind, to correct this she surrounds herself by people to stay productive.

Description: A middle aged fellow of mixed decent. He is short and lean, with balding brown hair and darkly tanned skin. A fairly advanced scanner is implanted under the skin on his left hand, which glows blue in the dark as a consequence. The scanner allows Akito to almost instantly the makeup and physical properties of a substance with a single touch.

Background: Akito was the nephew of a rather dishonorable and unethical Shogun on an insignificant backwater planet, and as such was raised with few rules and many resources. As a young boy Akito entertained himself with books of horror stories, unethical biology and medicine studies, and forbidden magic.

Young Akito began experimenting on dead animals at age eight, and before he turned nine was given full access to all graveyards under his uncles control. By the age of 12 Akito felt that he had learned all he could from corpses alone and graduated to performing his experiments on prisoners. For his fifteenth birthday Akito's uncle had proper laboratories built so that the boy could engage in the biological, arcane, and cybernetic studies as he pleased.

Akito soon became more feared and hated on his home planet than even his uncle. After watching several protests and several failed rebellions around the time of his 19th birthday, Akito came to the conclusion that his uncle's reign was uncle's reign wouldn't last forever. The young man harbored no illusions as to what would happen should his uncle fall: The mob would kill him.

Deciding that he would rather not face death until he had mastered it, Akito found employment on the next questionable ship of adventurers that landed on his planet, and never looked back. After many years of wandering the universe and offering his services as a scientist to ship captains in exchange for a small salary and the privacy needed to continue his ambitious and morbid research, Akito finally saved up enough money to buy a ship of his own, The Black Sea. The Black Sea is a mercenary ship that takes on all sorts of jobs, but Akito prefers to take tasks and visit places relating to ancient myths, horrible rumors, or forbidden magic in hopes of finding things to further his own experiments.

Background: A rich, well to do son of a powerful medical corporation's CEO and wife, Trevor went to school to become a doctor. The young child often visited the kitchens, having a close friendship with the 'help'. After finding out what a bore going to school to be a doctor was, he dropped out, sending a note to his parents asking them to instead pay for his schooling in the cuisine of his world.
Suffice to say, they disowned him. Left without money to pay rent, buy the food he loved cooking, and lacking any experience in the field of actual work, he joined up with a ship-crew. That was when he was twenty-five.
He's spent the last five years hopping from ship to ship. During this time, he picked up quite a few skills and recipes. Some of which DON'T make you barf.

It looks alright so far, but could you please add a bit more to your background? Even the most depressed person in the world has goals of some kind, and this is going to be a fairly character driven game. On top of that, both pilots need to be complete and total opposites of one another (something which I'll explain in a moment, once I've got a chance to rewrite the explanation so it isn't in GM Note shorthand), and so fleshing out your character a little more may help other prospective pilots write their own characters.

Red-haired, blue-eyed, and pasty-skinned, Aster cuts a striking figure appearance-wise, for better or worse. Dark bags mark her lower eyelids from endless sleepless nights in the engine bay, accenting the large, bug-like eyes hanging above them like globes, which even glint fluorescent hues in some lights due to subtle cybernetics. Despite her small, bony physique from years of from mediocre meals and the occasional less-than-adequate one, she is still somewhat muscled, on top of being flexible and agile, from years and years of pulling and squeezing herself through tight spaces. She’s able to navigate quickly through ships she’s familiar enough with due to her habit of utilizing vents, if large enough, or dodging around and vaulting over people parkour-style if not.

Aster’s body is marked by a multitude of scars in all shapes and sizes from countless close calls in engineering mishaps-- thick and thin, large and small, ropy and splotchy. She’s partially blind in both eyes after an accident with a high-energy plasma flare and an old pair of welding goggles, and requires cybernetic implants in order to see anything beyond vague, blurred shapes in black and white. The implants also afford her superhuman modes of vision such as magnification and infrared, almost as if in compensation.

The fingertips of her right hand have all been replaced with cybernetics that house various tools, including a tentacle-mounted camera, a miniature plasma torch (of minimal use outside ridiculously fast patch jobs due to a tiny power source and long recharge time), neural networking wires, etc.

The oldest memories Aster can recall are of crawling through the various nooks and crannies around the thousand parts of a thousand small ships, the metal slick and oily and sometimes still hot to the touch. She remembers squirming inside the open hull of a job-in-progress after the mechanics shop had closed and everyone but her and the rest of the grease monkeys had left. The warmth it gave off kept the chill of the night at bay, and the mechanics didn’t mind-- it just meant they could put them all to work faster in the morning.

Aster had no parents. Whether she was orphaned or abandoned, she doesn’t know; all she knows is that the mechanics who picked her up off the street and turned her into an engine-crawling grease monkey saved her life. They fed her, clothed her, and gave her a warm place to sleep. Sure, they only did it because she was a child, and children had small, lithe bodies that could get around in the tiny spaces between the gears and bolts and plasma belts much better and faster than the adult workers; sure, it was incredibly dangerous work, prone to injury, maiming, and even death; sure, it was virtual enslavement in the modern age, but who cared? Certainly not Aster.

Eventually, Aster grew too large to fit comfortably in-between the engine spaces, and, with no shortage of either adult workers or small orphaned children, she was no longer any use to the mechanics. Kicked out without ceremony, like so many pubescent former grease monkeys before her, Aster found herself at a loss. Having known life only as “redhead grease monkey” (“Red” for short) for so long, and having no other skills except those required to be just that, she decided that her only possible choice was to sign on with a ship’s crew, where she could serve as a cheap engineer-- taking on the last name “Red” for her old nickname, and the first name “Aster” based on what she could read of a nearby advertisement.

Most people experience a great deal of dizziness and nausea on their first space flight, especially if they didn’t grow up with it. Aster loved it the moment she got on-board a ship, and she never once looked back. Though ships and crews come and go, Aster never stays away from the endless void of space for long.

This is Aster’s third ship and fourth crew, as she remarks if asked (what she means by that, she refuses to say), and as such she’s a fairly experienced engineer. While once skittish and disinclined to speak, she’s grown to be rather vocal about her opinions, especially regarding ships and their parts. She’s hardly afraid to get hands-on with things, and loves to experiment with improvised parts even when perfectly-suitable ones are on hand (a skill the mechanics at her old “job” encouraged, for better or worse). To complement her clever intuition, she sports a dry, witty sense of humor more appropriate for amusing herself than making any friends.

She worked hard and earned a reputation as a good tactician. She earned many promotions before she was honourably discharged after a serious leg wound. She grew further apart from her family after this, traveling the Human territories looking for something to pass the time. She hasn't heard from her family since.
Now she wants to get back into the action.
