Project Awakened is a genre-defying game that lets you answer the question: "Who do you want to be?" For the first time in a modern AAA action game, you will have the opportunity to completely define your dream videogame character, from abilities to aesthetics, all while playing in an action-packed world that responds to your personal playstyle.

Project Awakened contains a modular powers and skill system that allows players to select from a huge number of abilities and combine them in unique ways. I just read through their Kickstarter page and was ready to diagnose them with Your World Syndrome until I reached the bit about much of the team having worked on Psi-Ops.  That game was fucking brilliant and had a diverse set of abilities that could interact with each other in many different ways.

I'll be pledging more than a few bob.

If these kickstarters that these game designers have dreamed up deliver, then we are in for a golden age of gaming. However, I just read an article on comic book kickstarters about how many of them haven't delivered the goods.

I don't think the people know what a AAA game is.

Actually, the whole project seems to be selling itself on "Hey look! We changed the definition for these words! Buy our game!"

I mean. Come on now. It looks like every other action RPG ever made. Maybe it could be good, but I don't think they are doing a very good job selling it.

Oh my, this looks beautiful. However, it's also super ambitious. I don't think I'll pledge, but if it comes to fruition I'll be happy to buy it full price.

I more or less did the same thing LC. That said, their best titles are pretty old at this point. They mentioned doing some mobile gaming that I'm not familiar with.

I think they oversold their ambitions a wee bit. Trying to be industry/genre redefining from the outset usually doesn't pan out with the actual game. Like, it's cool they have zeal and everything, but reading the world description they seem to have some sort of weird social justice message.

Anyways, I was curious at the $500,000 goal but I figure that has a lot to do with the cost of licensing UE4. My issue always  with games that are about full customizability and "dozens and dozens" of powers is that there's often a lot of duplication and redundancy. One ability is a re-skinned/renamed version of another. In an effort to cover all the angles (magic, melee, ranged), gameplay starts feeling generic. It'll be impossible to tell if that's the case with this until after it's either funded or folded. The Secret World basically promised this exact same thing, and while their systems are cool, large parts of it are notoriously flat, and the best customization involves your clothes, not your actual character.

I'm interested but this one kinda has red flags showing. Big goals, big talk and a sizable funding goal. They are at least professionals and have some prototypes to show off. But even if successfully backed it's hard to say what the game would ultimately end up like, and I think that's what's primarily what's stopping me. Game play is "build a really detailed character, do missions, shoot guys" so far. I guess when it comes to FPS, I'm a lot less eager to dive in, than with a genre that doesn't have a new offering every 2 months.

I'll keep an eye on it but I need more specifics than what they're saying to feel good about backing.

Note too, their conservative release estimate puts the game about a year and a half out. Which means this may be two or more years in development.

Their $25 (or $20) dollar tier does seem pretty tempting though, quite a bit offered at that level compared to other games.

They also have put it at a Aug 2014 delivery date which is at least reasonable for something this big

A person overhyped their concept once, so it follows that naturally everyone else must be doing the same thing.

This could be it.  This could be the game I've been wanting for a long.  If they can pull it off this will be unimaginably wonderful.

Only one thing wierding me out, how are they planning to develop this for almost two years with whatever's left from the KS's 500k?

Assuming they didn't intenionally leave it low so they get the money anyways, which could prove a bad decision as it will leave both them and their customers out of cash. Unless it's like, three or four guys or something working on it :S

The Secret World comparison is the biggest one I'm making too.  If it's set up like an MMO control scheme I probably wouldn't play it, that really gives a lot of room for cookie cutter skills and abilities like nenjin warned.  For all its customization, The Secret World comes down at the higher levels of play to a few builds.  Everybody who DPSes Nightmare dungeons runs Assault Rifle/Shotgun, everybody who tanks period runs Chaos/Blade, healing is the only role with some diversity but it's still pretty centralized.  Optimizers ruin everything on this front.  Pistols are rad, but why bring Pistols when Safety Off and Three Round Burst have demonstrably higher DPS than anything else available, especially when you stack proccing passives like Live Wire and One in the Chamber? 

Maybe they can do it, I can certainly hope, but as is I'm not investing any energy and certainly not any money on hte anticipation of this being awesome.

I'm a bit septic.
From what I understood, they want to make an action game (moddable, ok), with an extreme freedom in terms of ability/skills. Which sounds great, but there will always be some boundaries to what the player can do.

It feels like they want to make a engine which would allow for a very wide variety of actions. And the moddability, as interesting as it is, it requires a lot of work from modders. I'm not sure there'll be enough modders to provide for the lack of content.

And on Unreal Engine, which has his limitations.
