As far as I know there will always be a magma sea unless the world generated was an advanced one with it put to 0.

If you have clowns enabled then its forced to appear as well I think. So maybe both needs to be turned off. I havent really experimented with it myself though because I have always had the space I wanted for my forts anyway.

The black level number to the lower right is the absolute elevation. Sea level is at 99. Surface features such as mountains and oceans are constrained by the elevations set in worldgen, but underground features can go below the minimum elevation set in worldgen.

DF is just like the real world in that if you want to find magma start digging.

Don't stop until you find magma, because you will find it if you keep digging.
