I'm thinking of making a new thread for M&F with a fancy opening post and all, I happen to visit both bay12 and M&F many times a day anyway. Honestly, having a quality thread bumped on here will be of great benefit to the game.

Similar enough that if BM bored you to tears this will, too.

Which one is more worth checking out, this or Battlemaster? I am a huge medieval geek and I don't have time for time-consuming games and I've played Astro Empires :P
Also, is this paid or what, I don't understand the FAQ.

I know this one is paid, but it has a 2 wk (or 1 month) trial. Battlemaster is not very time consuming, you get 8-12 action points per 12 real time hour turn, which can be used up in 3 minutes. But there will probably be an hour or 2 of wiki trawling at first to figure out exactly what this will do.

The developer pretty much tells the players what to do, so don't go into it thinking that you're playing a sandbox. Worst money I ever spent, imo.

Is Roleplay enforced?

Not really, you can easily get away with very light roleplay, just make sure your names in-game somewhat fit the theme and try to not talk about the actual game in-game or real world stuff, as long as you do that there is no need to like do medieval speak or anything, at least half of the players speak modern without the modern terminology and its fine. However if you go too far into breaking the immersion for others the players will probably start shunning you in-game. OOC conversations are pretty common in-game actually and it's fine as long as you present them as such. To be honest we still haven't seen anyone persistently not roleplaying at all, so its hard to say what the reaction would be. Considering there was one guy who named his settlements to directly insult the developer and it wasn't a big deal until the players suggested fixing it I would say no, not much enforcement at the moment, but considering the game takes place in one persistent world with all the stuff going on becoming part of history the players will not take kindly to messing it up with OOC stuff.

TLDR: there is no non-roleplay server if that's what you mean, you are expected to roleplay to some extent.

Since the whole Rathgar vs Imperium fiasco Tom has given 0 directions or suggestions to influence in-game events.

Yep. I do hate the guy. I've never had the experience before of a dev actively calling me a coward on the forums because I wouldn't waste my troops in a disadvantageous position. No professionalism at all. Tom picks sides and chooses outcomes.

Maybe. I wouldn't know.

I've never had much luck with small population amateur text based MMOs. One guy quit to run a web(porn)-cam business, one guy never finishes his games, another game was poorly balanced with ignorant devs, another game was Bloc, which speaks for itself shitacular wise, and Battlemaster was blech, in my personal opinion. I'd say there are maybe 2 or 3 games I've played run by individuals that were good. A lot of devs these days are putting too much into players' hands and not bothering to make quality games. SpaceFed is probably the best of the games I've played. And the sequel.

Well, the developer of M&F has run a non-comercial game (Battlemaster) for well over 10 years, purely because he liked to do it. It is still going, has several thousand players and is still being developed.

M&F has been quite a while in developing, has new content added every week and very rapid bugfixing.

As to time consuming: It is well possible to play 1 or 2 characters - or up to 50. With a few characters you would need to log on 1-2 times a day, being well able to skip a day or two in between. So the time needed would be from 5-30 minutes a day...if playing several characters, being involved in scheming and politics you'd need 1 hour, max. Though during a war, with over 25 characters I got hooked into investing 3 hours a day....ramping back down now.

Bottomline, you can scale it pretty well - and as its a cooperative game, there are a lot of larger lords who are actively looking for single characters willing to join them, so you'd have something to do even if 'only' wanting to play a single char.
