Sister Kiera does not know what I've done here. Perhaps that is for the best. What I have done is insured out continued success here on planet. At what small cost is a few lives, and some gutted machinery? There were ghosts in those circuits, and these "survivors" could barely be called such, but the knowledge they possessed, that we have secured for ourselves, despite how little they wanted to part with it.

With what we've taken, we may read the words of the scripture written within our genes, and I've already set the men to work figuring out how this advanced weaponry functions. Kiera may have a soft spot for her dear provost, and may believe the University her allies in "seeking the truth the Lord wishes to reveal unto us", but I am far more of a realist than she is - they are heathens, ruthless and godless and their treachery knows no bounds. While she distracts them with her sweet words, and while she is in turn distracted by the promise of this new discovery (and what, I wonder, will her reaction be to the news that the University has been less than forthright with her? For make no mistake, before they died those refugees made it quite clear from whence they and their knowledge came), while all that is happening I will be surreptitiously distributing the weapons of the future to our soldiers even now roaming planets surface.

As the boiling mass of larval mind worms poured over the walls, the men of Ecological Unit 01-B stood resolute, flame guns at the ready. As the jets started up and the flames rose, blackening the metal and shrivelling the worms instantly, sweat poured off the men's faces. With temperatures rising ever higher, every man stood grim-faced in the face of such horror, all of them looking on at the destruction they wrought. Clad in silvery fire-proof suits, they were a stark reminder of the alien nature of planet. Spraying jets of flame 30' long, they held their ground as first paint blistered, and then as the softening metal caused the walls themselves to sag. As the mind-worms continued their relentless advance, the staunch fighters of Unit 01-B began their measured retreat into the as-yet-untouched tranquillity of the base. Step by step they moved backwards as the tides of worms approached, but not one of the fighters turned and fled. The silence was broken only by the hiss and crackle of burning worms, until finally, after what seemed like hours of fighting, the all-clear siren began its wail, and the civilians began to relax their death-grips on the flame guns.

A fine reminder of the superiority of mankind over such wilderness, and a precursor of the fungus purges that were to come.

"Brave"? Greedy, more like it. I'm sure you promised them some incredibly incentives for their service, and then did everything you could to weasel out of actually paying them.

Or you probably nerve-stapled to the bastards to "strengthen their resolve".

This is not the Hive, Kiera. A capitalist society ensures social mobility and equal opportunities. Perhaps you would have no qualms about nerve-stapling your 'followers', but the rest of humanity does actually have a moral code based on rational thought.

The men and women of 01-B carried out their orders to perfection, without the need for financial incentives. The enterprising citizens of Morgan Industries are glad to risk their lives for their fellow man. They know that their survival and prosperity relies on their own sweat - maybe your citizens should follow their example, instead of wasting their time praying in the dirt to a god who never answers.

None of my citizens would take a reward, though it was offered. They know their resoluteness in the face of death has been repaid by the survival of thousands of people just like them. Those few who perished have been placed in the cryo-tanks, awaiting the day when science can make them live again. The cost is inconsequential, considering the state of our capacitors. Can your followers rely on such support, Kiera? Or do they still have delusions about their god providing them with such solutions?

You speak big, Twig, but we all know that if you haven't committed those atrocities, the only reason is that you saw the alternative as more valuable. The most we can really say is that you haven't done these things yet, isn't it? That's where putting your rational thought ahead of a civilization based on morality will end, mark my words.

Morgan, I am appalled that you would use the name of my society in such a disgraceful manner. As a progressive leader, I can hardly tolerate the usage of nerve stapling. True discipline must come from within, for if it does not it shows no true conviction and no real belief. My people need neither reward nor punishment; neither material nor immaterial. The promise of progress and of a better world for their progeny, their peers, and their people, is enough: is this not the true selflessness that the Conclave Bible praises so highly? Of course, there are the few that, ah, act out, but I assure you all, the methods by which I return them to the fold consist no more of a stern talk on the importance of their remaining on the path towards progress and Utopia.

And Morgan, before you boast too highly of your social mobility and equal opportunity, I will bring your attention back to the society of the 19th century. Its form of capitalism is the one that bears greatest resemblance to your own, and you can see quite plainly that there was great social immobility and extremely unequal opportunity. Now, the socialism as practiced by the Soviet Union and such states was no better, with the vanguard elite, which is why it has been our greatest striving to provide true equality to humanity, under the pretenses of working solely for the purpose of the betterment of humanity, not under the nebulous direction of ideology and the bureaucrats that will so readily abuse it. And finally, Sister Kiera, I feel your words have a certain irony to them. Certainly you too have promised a nonexistent reward: the reward of an afterlife in Heaven?

I will say no more, this is quite sufficient.
