It's amazing- 25 years ago, professor Mcdonnell had been approached by a re-breather-masked man who asked him if he would like to take a part in the first real research project on Chiron.
It was hard to believe, to say the least. At the time, Mcdonnell had been manually digging trenches for sewage treatment... back then, strong backs were far more useful than strong minds, as the chaos of the initial landing was still subsiding.
For nearly three decades, Mcdonnell had watched his fellow researchers and scientists grow old, working on this special project. His own daughter had been born, and she grew up working with the gene sequencing equipment that he himself had designed. There were shortfalls, yes. There were issues that the earth-side researchers would never have anticipated. But now, though he was getting older (not that retiring was much of an option), the end was in sight. There were terabytes of information, not only about human genes, but also proteins which planet's biosphere shared with earth life, and lingering hints of some kind of other connection... all that remained was to process the data, breaking it down into real, usable knowledge about the human genetic code.
Mcdonnell finally finished his report, giving an estimate of seven years, given good conditions, before completion. 20 years ago, he'd sent a similar report. But this time he was sure.
Thirty minutes after he sent the message to the leadership council, the man who'd first visited him out in the sump fields, a man who never seemed to age, visited Mcdonnell's quarters. Apparently he decided this project needed his personal attention. Seven years was simply too long...
