Pets following around ghostly masters?
« on: February 02, 2013, 11:22:36 am »

I just spotted a pet following around its ghostly master- could be a coincidence, but it wasn't in a meeting area, so I'm inclined to think not.  Has anyone else seen this sort of behavior?

EDIT:  Okay, he's clearly following his master around.  It's a war animal, which was assigned to the guard before his death.  I wonder if one would see the same behavior from an adopted pet?

I think this is just a weird side effect of the pet code. Pets that lose their masters will stay at their grave area (except cats, who will unadopt themselves) so I guess it's possible that really what they are doing is "following" their master's last known location. Since ghosts are really the dwarves, I wouldn't be surprised to see their pets following them around.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

This would be a really cool feature if it was intentional. Or not. Either way, feature.

I find it hilarious when it is a murderous ghost, who tears the limbs off his following pet.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Until his 5 war dogs are all dead.

I usually just butcher pets as soon as their masters die.

It could be a feature - the grave thing, anyway. Pets mourning their lost master.

AFAIK it is intended by Toady (I think he mentioned it once, though that was back in 40d IIRC). Personally what I find funniest about it is the fact that cats will "un-adopt" their deceased dwarven owners rather then hanging about their graves. :P

Exactly, since when should cats care about their owners?

The cat only cares so long as you can still open its tins of Whiskas.
After that, you may as well be dead; if you're not actually.

My cat loves whiskas and I love my cat.

Tastes great with some plump helmet biscuits. Also I get a fancy bone toy hammer for my kid.
