Well you just refuted the theory that Dwarf Fortress attracts a more educated crowd. That guy who posted the theory on the Lamb-Chapyblin dipole is going to be disappointed.

I don't know why the type of crowd DF attracts even crossed your mind. It's not a club for smart people, it's a collection of people who enjoy games. 0mG L0L DF |S S0 FUNN!!!1!

Chill out a little.

I'm not angry, just disappointed by the increase in the use of slang. I don't understand the obsession with it. I prefer complete, well thought out sentences. I know I'm in the minority, I accept that people learn to write and spell from Twitter instead of school. But that doesn't mean I have to like it, or that I can't speak out about. Just as you can continue to butcher the English language I can continue to say you shouldn't.

It's not about it being a fad, the 'cool thing' to do. It's about it being more efficient, getting the same idea across in a shorter amount of time and an easier to read form. I'm not sure if you're talking about the absolute extreme of this, but I'm okay with things like "lol", "XD", "ik", etc.

A persons use of slang doesn't indicate them being less intelligent.

It also helps to indicate tone online, something which is hard to do since it's over text..

And usual English conventions end up making a text conversation very difficult to extract any kind of emotion from, unless specifically stated.

Unless you start forming sentences like the Elcor from mass effect...

I merely used "moar" as added emphasis on "more", as well as to add more laughs to the word.

Second point which was arguably useless, but internet cultural osmosis will do that to you.

See, I can write properly if I want.

If I hadn't been on the internet so long, high school English classes would have been a BREEZE for me. Having failed TWO of them, though, I'm starting to realize that my use of commas, caps, and ellipses is.... somewhat incorrect, more designed to project emotion or voice over text then to be pleasing to the eyes of a teacher.

God, I completely agree!  Just the other day I was talking to someone about politics, and they had an opinion on public policy.  "Oh, you took a course on the subject?" I asked.  Do you know what they said?  "No."  No? No?  What did they do- just form an opinion on their own?  Did they just- just read about it?  What a moron! There's nothing worse than an autodidact.  As far as I'm concerned, if it's not from school, it's not knowledge.

Especially when it comes to something as specialized as language.  It's not like people are just automatically learn language- it's not as though we're just some specially privileged species, with a remarkable talent for acquiring huge vocabularies and using complex grammar structures.  Do people think that we somehow evolved with a natural tendency to acquire the language that's being spoken around us.  Ridiculous!

And why do people think they can just get away with using mutant strains of the pure tongue.  It's a very carefully crafted language!  Do they think it's just composed of words adapted from other langues over time, as the product of some blind process of linguistic evolution.  Could we really have gotten by for thousands of years if we hadn't immediately standardized spelling and grammar.  Do they think the rules of grammar that we use today are often just ad-hoc improvisations derived from observations of general practice in a particular period rather than carefully devised to be the very best rules.  Are they under the impression that when they speak imprecisely other people will often just be able to guess what they mean.  And most of all who gave them the idea that it was somehow better to speak in the same way as people around you than to always apply one set of rules in all situations while complaining about the ignorant majority.

I'll tell you what we need: moar teachers.  We should put moar teacherz in ur internetz, 4 corectin ur grammarz.  Dawg.

EDIT:  Not, but seriously:  volcanoes appear on the map as red triangles, and you can use the finder to find a site with a volcano.  It's important to note that you're likely (but not certain) to have very steep cliffs around a surface volcano, so you might want to make a small embark if you have FPS issues.

And this sarcastic rant is intended humorously:  I really don't care much about the silliness of grammar nazis.  They're just hurting inside.

Honestly? The fact so many people defend the use of meaningless gibberish is worse than using it. Should I post endless amounts of racial slurs just because other people do it? Will you attack anyone that dares to say it's wrong of me to use such words? Of course not, because you've been told it's uncool to use those words. But I see no distinction. They're perversions of the English language, and as such there is no reason to use them. And I'll continue to think poorly of anyone who thinks any slang is an acceptable form of communication.

Why are you whinging? You're ruining the Bay 12 Forums. This is a happy place, filled with love and joy, and varying degrees of insanity. Why do you need to hijack this wonderful thread with your petty complaints that someone is using a portmanteau which is commonly accepted internet jargon? Why not take your righteous fury to the darker forums of the internet where there are actual trolls who think that that is the correct spelling of the word.
Take Oddball's advice and say something righteous and hopeful for a change. And quit with the negative waves!

Wait, something about that user name...

Randy Gnoman looks closely at ExecratedDwarf.

This is ExecratedDwarf.  It is a troll.  It menaces with spikes of English.

Given that high-falootin' SAT word he put in his user name, I think he might have had this planned.  But I'll leave the speculumating to y'all.

I'm disappointed that you feel that way. You just refuted the theory that Dwarf Fortress attracts a crowd of nice people, I guess. Although I'm not sure what you're talking about; it is, literally, not meaningless. No, your example of racial slurs is what is meaningless. It's "uncool" to use racial slurs because it's bigoted and offensive, not because they sound silly. The fact that you see no distinction is an error in your perception, there is a clear distinction between internet slang words and insulting someone because of the color of their skin. I'd say that since so many people defended the use of internet slang means that maybe you should reconsider your position on the topic, and if you arrive at the same conclusion that it's meaningless gibberish, that's fine. At least you sat down and thought about it.

So says the guy attaching baseless ad hominem attacks to every statement. That's you btw.

Actually, "moar" is NOT a misspelling. It's a portmanteau. Of "More" and "Roar", encompassing both meanings. That makes it a legitimate neologism. In fact, every word in the entire language is a neologism if you go back far enough, and "standard spellings" are a modern invention, with vast variations in spelling prior to the advent of dictionaries. There is no "true" spelling of anything.

Phonetically, "moar" actually makes sense to how it's pronounced, whereas "more" does not!
