Astronautics: Alpha demo released!
« on: February 01, 2013, 10:42:20 pm »

Astronautics is a 2D space sim I'm working on where the focus is on constructing your own ship and exploring the galaxy, searching for new technology to improve your ship while fending off pirates, hostile aliens and anything else that wants to tear the ship you worked so hard on constructing apart.

Primary features will include:
  • Ship construction
  • Gravity around stars, planets and moons
  • A massive, procedurally generated galaxy to explore
  • Individual ship components can be damaged or destroyed through combat or overheating
  • Neutonian physics
  • Earn money through trade, combat, piracy or various missions

The demo will include a handful of star systems to explore and lower tier components to use to construct and improve your ship. The full version will allow you to explore the whole galaxy, give you the potential to collect a lot more components and other possible features I'm not ready to talk about yet.

I'll post information on the setting once I have more of it fleshed out.

Demo to-do list:
  • Power management
  • Trade system/UI
  • Item drop/collection
  • Cargo holds
  • Ship damage
  • Space stations
  • Map screen
  • More planet types
  • Stars(suns)
  • Star system generation
  • Finish ship editor
  • Life support systems
  • Moons
  • More ship components
  • Balancing
  • More visual enhancements
  • Trade commodities
  • Factions
  • Star system jumping
  • Docking AI
  • Dev-mode load/save ship templates(for AI ships)
  • Text input box(for saving, naming, etc..)

Ships In Space. Star Stuff. Super Spaceship Simulator. S.T.A.R. (Spaceships That Are Rad.)

I'd need more context for good punnery, though. I haven't played Escape Velocity for comparison. Is it realistic to the extreme, is there FTL travel, are humans alone in the universe, is it more about fighting or exploration, et cetera.

I've only played Escape Velocity Nova but I think they're all about the same. EV Nova is equal parts fighting and exploration, with a bit of trading. There is FTL travel. I wouldn't call any parts of the game extremely realistic but it does have basic newtonian physics. Ships don't collide with each other which makes the controls more forgiving since you don't have to worry about ramming into everything and also allows for more ships flying around at once.

I need to edit the OP when I get the time but my game is going to be a bit more realistic on the physics side, although like in EV Nova there won't be collisions between ships. What I mean by that is when constructing your ship you'll have to take more things into consideration like the total mass of your ship and it's center of gravity. Depending on how you arrange your thrusters you can either make your ship super fast or make it turn on a dime or anything in between.

You'll also have to deal with things like heat and power management. Put your engines too close to the cockpit and you'll start frying electronics and cooking the pilot. If you get too close to the sun your engines might over heat and start taking damage, lowering their output until they stop functioning completely. And if your generator isn't powerful enough you may not be able to fire your weapons and move at the same time.

And then there's the gravity. Yes, you'll have to deal with the gravity of every massive object you come across which should make for some interesting dog fights around planets.

Will hitboxes be variable and not just squares/rectangles?

Spaceship Simulator 2013
But that would abbreviate to SS13 and that would just be plain confusing.

Sea of stars.
Eh, too close to this. I've actually found that pretty much any title you can think of with the word "Star" in it is already taken. I may have actually come up with a good name that describes my game fairly accurately. "Astronautics".

Orbital Conflict

has a ring to it.

:P

Also, http://sourceforge.net/projects/orbcon/

I swear that's a problem I keep running into. I'll come up with a really cool sounding name and it's already taken.

In other news, my engines are overheating. Progress!

What are you using to make this sim?

Velocity Blast is the only idea I have for a name given what you've said about your sim so far.

I have much interest here.
Name idea:
Null Velocity
Because that makes sense as a name.
