Gradient maps would be good for keeping stuff away from stars. Maybe construct a base map with very high values based on temperature and have ship equipment cause ship-local modifications to the gradients during path planning. The "kickass cooling unit" could cause a highly negative gradient modification to the temperature gradient to let the ship pass through the otherwise dangerously hot points. It wouldn't directly influence the path costs, just decrease the influence the star has on path validity somewhat.

Digging's a lot like surgery, see -- you grab the sharp thing and then drive the sharp end of the sharp thing in as hard as you can and then stuff goes flying and then stuff falls out and then there's a big hole and you're done. I kinda wish there was more screaming, but rocks don't hurt so I guess it can't be helped.

Wow, has it really been over a month since I posted? Well believe it or not this project is not dead. Far from it. I've actually made significant progress and I'm hoping to have a demo ready soon.

I have however made a change to the overall design goals. There will not be any trading features as previously planned. Instead I'm focusing more on the construction side. You'll start off with your own space station and a basic ship and you'll gather resources to enhance both and construct more. Basically it's going from being a Privateer type of game to more of a Minecraft in space type of game, sans the mining.

I'll post some new screenshots when I get home from work to show off some of the new stuff I've added over the past few days.

Sounds interesting, ship design is always the most fun to me anyway :P

Also I crossed off quite a few of the stuff in the to do list in the OP. The trade stuff is in red because they've been replaced by the resource gathering and construction stuff, which is mostly done. I still need to add resource spending to the ship editor.

I'm down to testing, bug fixing and adding some additional content. Expect a playable demo in the next couple of days!

I'll also try to get another video up later tonight.

If you haven't already, follow my facebook page. I need all the help I can get getting the word out about Astronautics.  www.facebook.com/astronauticsgame

I'll just leave this here...

Been doing a lot of streamlining and bug fixing. One more night of testing and the demo should be ready to go. I really hope everyone enjoys it. I've put a lot of hard work into this game and my biggest fear is that it will somehow fall into obscurity. But I really won't know until I finally put it out there for the whole world to praise or ridicule however they see fit.

Anyway, one last video!

Excellent. If your cargo hold gets breached, will you be able to see your cargo go tumbling out into space, or will it not be tracked?

I was going to put this off until after the demo, but I ended up adding it a few minutes ago and it works flawlessly! And as you would expect, annoyingly.
