Engraving in Adventurer
« on: February 01, 2013, 01:44:33 pm »

I was just curious if it was possible to engrave weapons or armor in adventurer on the vanilla game? I saw someone talk about it in a post awhile back but I was never sure it was possible!

"Engraving" is only for walls/floor... You mean "decorate", which, unfortunately, you can't do in adventure mode. You can get pre-decorated items from merchants, and you can decorate something in fort mode, abandon, and go in with a guy to pick it up, but that's about it, unless you use a mod with adventure mode reactions (like Genesis or Masterwork, or something like that.)

Oohhh and decorate** (my bad :P) I was hoping there was a way to so I could take some random piece of an enemy like their tooth and decorate my weapon with it. Is it an actual part of the Masterwork mod to be able to do such a feat? :D

while it isn't possible in vanilla, I know as a fact it's doable in adventure mode. Now, you won't get any actual "engraving" type decorations, but you will be able to get different types of reactions to "ring", "spike" and "band" different materials. I know there's an adventure mode mod somewhere in the Mod forum, but if you want a quick and dirty reaction here's one:

Code: [Select]
[REACTION:DECORATE_ITEM_WITH_BONE]
[NAME:decorate item with bone]
[ADVENTURE_MODE_ENABLED]
[REAGENT:A:1:NONE:NONE:NONE:NONE][ANY_BONE_MATERIAL]
[REAGENT:B:1:NONE:NONE:NONE:NONE][PRESERVE_REAGENT]
[IMPROVEMENT:100:B:SPIKES:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:A:NONE]
[IMPROVEMENT:20:B:RINGS_HANGING:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:A:NONE]
[IMPROVEMENT:20:B:BANDS:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:A:NONE]
[SKILL:BONECARVE]

This is from the wanderer mod(it ads a bunch of different reactions to adventure mode and some neat interactions... it does require some modding to play nicely with some other mods though). Credit for this reaction goes to the creator of the mod.

Here's an even quicker and even dirtier one:

Code: [Select]
[REACTION:DECORATE_ITEM_WITH_ANYTHING]
[NAME:decorate item with anything]
[ADVENTURE_MODE_ENABLED]
[REAGENT:A:1:NONE:NONE:NONE:NONE]
[REAGENT:B:1:NONE:NONE:NONE:NONE][PRESERVE_REAGENT]
[IMPROVEMENT:100:B:SPIKES:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:A:NONE]
[IMPROVEMENT:20:B:RINGS_HANGING:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:A:NONE]
[IMPROVEMENT:20:B:BANDS:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:A:NONE]
[SKILL:BONECARVE]

It certainly is possible, though eventually the decorations get to quantum stockpile levels.

The question, though, was "can you do it in vanilla?"

Which, unfortunately, you can't. YET.

More so you want Toady to program in engraving after programming in the means to mod it in yourself?

It would be a lot easier if he did. Everyone doesnt have time to learn modding and some people are just not smart enough to so on thier own. Adding few lines like the ones putnam posted over should be easy, especially considering there are loads of mods with them and its pretty well known if you have looked into adventure mode modding. It quite frankly wouldnt take more than 10 minutes.

It doesn't take more than 2 minutes if you... learn how to mod.

To put it in another way, it's in the game. Just that he made it so that you can add it in yourself, like spells and interactions or add in.
hell you could do it yourself with a notepad file and diving into the raw section of your DF folder go find the reaction file and drop the code in(then gen up another world).
It's not like engraving items is hardcoded to be in fort mode like say engraving walls and floors,( which you can only get access to adventure mode through hacking.)

In fact, I'm all for this being a modding only thing. DF is getting bigger, and that means that clutter is going to get worse, get fixed, and get worse again. Simple asthetic things that are not core-game or mod-intensive should be left as an option, I feel. Other things, such as turning contaminants to full liquids, should be an option. I'm all for Toady giving us the capability to easily add such things without necessarily doing it himself.
