Capture rate math time!

Let's assume the Kingler was reduced to almost 0 HP. Technically there was a bit of red left, but it's 'close enough' for this calculation. Although, since Sirus didn't yet have 6 Pokemon, Kingler would've been placed directly into his roster, and he might've noticed its actual health values... 

Kingler has a base capture rate of 60. This gives it a modified capture rate a of ~60 if HP_current ~= 0.

This gives us a shake value b of ~45,643, a shake probability of 69.6%, and a total capture chance of 23.5% with a standard Pokeball.  This gives us a 55.3% chance that, out of 3 Pokeballs, Kingler would be captured. Bear in mind that we assumed Kingler to have ~0 HP - since this is slightly incorrect, the capture chance is actually a bit lower than what we calculated above.

TL:DR: Sirus traded 3 Pokeballs for a ~50/50 chance at capturing Kingler, and succeeded masterfully.

So if I'm reading that link properly, the Pokemon's level doesn't matter as much as it's maximum HP? I never knew that

Yep, pretty much. Things that don't matter, but you might think would:

* Level. A level 100 Pokemon is just as easy to capture as a level 1 Pokemon. Normally, later-game Pokemon are the ones with lower capture rates... but it's entirely species-dependent. Which makes life really interesting with random distributions. 
* Successive Pokeballs. When I was young, I always thought that throwing a lot of balls in a row 'weakened' the target. Nope - assuming no damage is dealt, the first ball is just as strong as the last.

Things that do matter:

* Health. At full health, a Pokemon has 1/3rd the capture rate of a nearly-KO'd Pokemon.
* Non-volatile status effect - that is, the effects that don't wear off when switched out. Sleep and Frozen (the two temporary, total-disables) confer a 2x catch rate. The rest of them (paralysis, poison, burn) are 1.5x. So, sleeping the target turns all your Pokeballs into Ultra Balls!
* Target's species. Flimsy targets have high capture rates - for instance, the infamous Rattata has a 255 capture rate, giving it a ~33% chance to be captured in a Pokeball at full health. Legendaries have capture rates as low as 3.

Let me head off most of the criticism at the pass by agreeing that yes, the proportions are probably all terrible, there's no shading, and I've clearly never heard of perspective. It's crappy Paint work, what do you expect?

That said, I had fun with this one. I have never drawn any of these 'mons before, but I think they turned out alright. I think Genji turned out the best, while Nina was the hardest to draw.

I love the Kingler thrown in. Kingler is a goddamn badass, what with his ULTIMATE CLAW and all. Methinks Roxanne will be a pushover now, though. The world is not ready for level 3 Kingler.

...damn, that's rough. The one upside is that, in most games, you either trade for Beldum, are outright given one, or encounter them in the Safari Zone. Still, sucks for D/P/Pt players. Thankfully, this is an Emerald run. 

Even using a Ghost-type might not be enough. Take Down has 20 PP; after that, Beldum will start Struggling, which hits Ghost-types (and, therefore, hits Beldum with recoil for the self-KO). For comparison, the almighty Timer Ball takes 30 turns to reach maximum effectiveness. I guess a Gen IV player could just wait for nightfall and throw Dusk Balls, but still...

Use hypnosis on it. This should give you roughly 40 turns (number pulled from colon) to catch it.

Use Spore so you don't miss and waste precious turns.

Still, sucks for D/P/Pt players.

At least it's immune to the sandstorm in the place it swarms. That's the one kindness afforded to the players by the devs.

Thankfully, this is an Emerald run. 

An Emerald run with randomized pokemon, thus allowing the possibility of running into a wild Beldum.
