I vote Tyrogue, just cause Tyrogue is one of my favorite Pokemon. I always raise all three evolutions from a Tyrogue, regardless of if they are are available anywhere else.

Nickname: the (all lowercase)

Again, for the hilarity of reading the text.

BALANCE OF POINTS

Larvitar : Crappy ass early game, awesome endgame. Would perhaps end in an early game over, especially if that Surskit crits.

Clefairy : Decent off the bat, but apparently very difficult to evolve. Probably the safest decision.

Tyrogue : Ooooh man. I'm not sure about Hitmontop, but Hitmonchan will give you a decent type - counter with the elemental punches without being ridiculously overpowered. If you end up with Hitmonlee, you're kind of buggered - Smogon University tells me he's actually pretty good, but IIRC he naturally only learns fighting type moves, which leaves you vulnerable to elemental flyers, bugs, psychics etc. Oh and there is the fact that he's Tyrogue.

That said, I like the uncertainty of Tyrogue. :)

I would vote for Larvitar. Tyranitar is one of my favorite pokemon, aside from being of pseudo-legendary status.

But you'll probably never get Tyranitar before the Elite Four unless you go like a one Pokemon challenge because he evolves at level 55 or 60 or something. Maybe 65. But if you do, you could probably wipe out the Elite Four with almost just Tyranitar. I almost did once with a moveset consisting of Blizzard, Thunder, Rock Slide, and Crunch.

So I'd vote for Tyrogue.

You wouldn't be able to evolve without a Moon Stone, though, which are only found... on wild Lunatone. Which are pretty rare in Emerald, IIRC.
There is a moon stone in Meteor Falls. It's accessible immediately upon getting there too. Also Lunatone don't exist in Emerald. Also also monster generation is randomized so who knows what zany shit will happen.

Clefairy.

Huh. I forgot about that.

Tyrogue all the way, then. Clefairy is too OP, goddamn. We need something fragile and prone to failure. (You just know he's going to die to Hi Jump Kick recoil.)

That's why I picked Tyrogue. Larvitar is probably as win / lose switch - if he survives long enough to evolve, he can solo large amounts of enemies. If he doesn't, then he can't. :P

Part 2: The Journey Begins

I decided to grab the middle ball. I don't know why exactly, but the pokemon inside felt like a  scrappy fighter to me. Having made my choice, I ran towards the beleaguered man and began my first battle.

My pokemon was a short little purple guy in boxer shorts. I couldn't help but feel a little underwhelmed, an impression which was heightened by the discovery that he barely knew how to fight. All he could do was body-check his foe, but that was more than enough to drive away the little critter. My first victory!

Now that the "threat" was gone, the man stood up and introduced himself. Turns out this was the famous Professor Birch! I thought for sure that he was joking, but when he led me into the lab - being greeted cordially by the nerdy guy from before - I knew he was telling the truth. When I told him my name was Ing F. (I never said my full last name when I could avoid it) he brightened up instantly. Seems he knew my father, and wanted me to have the little purple guy (which he called a "Tyrogue") as my first pokemon! Birch suggested I give it a nickname, and after a moment I settled on "Champ".

After meeting and naming my new partner, Birch suggested that I find May and ask her to show me the ropes of Pokemon Training. Turns out she ran off to Route 103, so that's where I'm going!

But first I grabbed my Potion from my room. As much as I didn't want to think about it, Champ could get hurt by wild pokemon. I had to keep him safe!

Here we go...

To Be Continued...

Should we take wagers on what our precious little pre-hitmon will grow up to be?

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Considering his nature, I give him about a 3/4 chance of becoming a hitmonchan.

Depends on if he gets his hands on some vitamins and on the EVs given by the random Pokemon he battles.
Also if he survives to level 20.

But yeah, probably Hitmonchan, which kind of sucks. He has good type coverage, but the elemental punches aren't physical yet so he won't have the stats to take advantage of them.

Part 3: A Friendship is Forged

Almost there...

AGH! Something's coming after me!

It's some sort of big bug. Hopefully Champ can squash it...

:o
I picked a winner. Wonder what else is on this route?

Awww, it's so cute! 83

OHARCEUSITSPITSFIRERUNAWAYYYYYYY

Thankfully, we made it back to Littleroot Town without encountering any more devil foxes. Mom was able to fix Champ right up, but I was scared. I knew that wild Pokemon could be dangerous, but I've been a trainer for all of half an hour and I nearly lost my partner already. I resolved to be extra careful in the future.

Finally, we made it to Oldale Town in one piece. Champ took a bit of a beating against another one of those fire-spitting creatures, but he was in much better shape and in much higher spirits. Still, to the Pokemon Center we went. I wanted to try and get a bit more training in before finding May.

Outside, a guy in an apron gave me a potion as a promotional item! I resolved to visit the Pokemart again in the future. Back to Route 101!

What the heck is this? Tackle it, Champ!

...Huh.

Hey! Get your slimy tentacles off of him!

This thing isn't going down easy, that's for sure, but it seems to be weakening. I think it's time to use that potion the shopkeeper gave me!

The potion pays off! The weird shell creature finally passes out, and Champ looks quite a bit stronger than he did before!

Alright, north of Oldale town is Route 103. If Birch's info is correct, May is somewhere around here. Probably some new Pokemon as well.

Like this bizarre thing. Doesn't seem to have any special abilities, but it's an even match for Champ.

There she is! She seems to be taking notes or something. She seems a bit startled once she notices me, but remembers my name. Before I can say anything else though, she challenges me to a battle.

I, of course, agree.

She sends out some weird blue thing. It seems almost amphibious, and I found myself hoping that it wasn't nearly as tough as that shell-thing from earlier.

Oh Arceus it is D:
Potion time!

That was far too close. If I hadn't bought another potion at the store, I would have lost for sure.
The battle was enough to bring Champ up to level 7. He gained a bit more defense and a tiny bit of strength, but he clearly needs a lot more.

As we each recalled our Pokemon, I worried that May might get angry that I essentially cheesed my way through my first real battle. Instead, she smiled! "That was a great battle!", she said. "I think I know why my dad has his eye out for you now. Let's get back to the lab!"

And so she ran off. I think I may have made a friend.
