Serious pain in calf.
« on: January 31, 2013, 09:18:44 pm »

I'm just wondering if this ever happens to anybody else ever, and if I should be worried.
Every now and then, not than often, but sometimes when I am sleeping or just laying down and resting, I will get a sudden strong, blunt pain in one of my calf muscles. Only thing to do is try to not flex my leg and massage the muscle.
Seems very odd for this to only ever happen when I'm not even putting any pressure on it, anybody know any cause?

When you feel your muscles are they all clenched as tight as possible?

If so it's probably just a cramp. Drink more water.

Yea, pretty much.
I thought it could be a cramp, but then I didn't know people got such bad cramps just from resting, or why it only happened in a very specific muscle group and never anywhere else.

I've had this same exact problem.

Stretch more regularly. Preferably, don't wait until it happens, but rather, stretch regularly and daily as preventative maintenance.

It helps immensely.

Here's a web-med article on leg cramps, including ones that happen while sleeping.  http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/tc/nighttime-leg-cramps-topic-overview

When I ran cross country competitively, I would occasionally cramp similarly in one or both calves. It's a lack of electrolytes, most likely, though other nutrient deficiencies can cause similar cramps. And they can happen whether you're lying down or in the middle of a run. So go easier on yourself or ingest some salts, man.

Well I do ride/walk everywhere, and right now I'm almost living like a vegetarian... One would think such a life style would avoid health issues.
Fuck it, I'll make cook a steak with soy sauce tonight.

Potassium is good for cramps.

Eat a banana.

Funny thing about vegetables: they lack some of the major electrolytes. You can get Potassium and Magnesium very easily, but only rarely can you get Sodium or Chloride, asides from leafy greens. And Calcium is very difficult to get without meat. (Asparagus springs to mind, but naught else.)

I get that fairly often. Word of advice: stretch the muscle by extending your leg fully. I know that seems like a bad idea, but it'll keep it from getting worse, which it will if you keep it curled.

I've had some of these be so bad my calf has been swollen for days afterwards. I even walked with a limp during it.

Thankfully, sodium and chloride are kind of a no-brainer given, well, seasoning anything ever.

Wow, it seems everyone has this problem O_O

I myself get it rarely, it hurts me immensely when it happens but they only last about 15 seconds, after which the muscle is tender for about a day or two.
