Buy the medkit now, then buy the book when you're done with the job

I still suggest not wasting our money on stuff that isn't food.

How was I unaware of this wonderful thing until now. Quite apart from the beautiful art, the setting is very interesting and the characters feel alive. Good stuff!

Take the medkit to help us not die during the explosives job. With any luck that job will pay enough to cover the book. And don't forget to head back to the fisherman's house for dinner!

Actually this is a pretty good idea. I don't know what we could buy that would be appropriate though- either the ingredients for a traditional Flind dish, or replacement preserves.

We're not transporting firecrackers, you know. Anyways, with our medical knowledge as it is, what could we really heal?

More than what we could do with a book.

Well, + 6 Medicine isn't half bad, honestly.

We also have + 6 Survival, which prompts me to ask a question of the setting: How common are medicinal plants and such? Enough that with our skill we could find some in most places, or no? I think we should get the medkit anyway, since we'll be getting both when all is said and done regardless, but if we could patch together some of our own if needed, that would be cool too.

It's all a question of scale- you need to be holding that firecracker to lose a hand, while that's the same degree of injury we'll suffer if we're a dozen feet away from the boom boom wagon. We just need to be careful about not being on the wagon when it goes up.

Besides, we haven't heard details on the mission yet, so for all we know we'll be accosted by brigands or hostile wildlife or who knows what all else. I'd rather have basic medical supplies to prevent infection and ensure natural recovery than have to pony up for magical healing (assuming such exists in the setting.)

MORE IMPORTANTLY, maybe we'll get a rakish scar to go with our hat and cape! Truly the most dashing of accessories, if we can treat it so it doesn't look super evil/disfiguring.

It even better if it does not goes up at all.

You were planning to have a 15 year old magical girl kill Witches by drinking them under the table!? It's original, at least.

More than what we could do with a book.
True, but the book is to learn alchemy, which would be kinda useful in figuring out how to use and transport explosives without accidentally detonating them...

Well, + 6 Medicine isn't half bad, honestly.
Point taken, point untouched. We're transporting lots of high-grades explosives...
And, for that matter, what exactly can we do with a simple medkit?

Probably, but who knows?

And without knowing anything about alchemy or explosions, how would we be able to guess that?

If that happens, I'll recant my stance. If not, I'm staying true.

Which, with knowledge of alchemy and hence explosives, would be more probable.

Take the explosives job and buy the medikit just in case something goes wrong

You explain that you're a bit short for both items. You offer to buy the Medical Kit for now, and say you might be back for the book later. Melody accepts your 10 Silver, and hands you a cloth-wrapped bundle, and a small paper box.

INVENTORY:

There you go. Now, you won't be doing surgery with this, but I think I covered most of your First-Aid needs... bandages, needle and thread, some simple remedies, and a bit of plaster mix. It's the same just-add-water stuff used in sculpture and masonry, but I figure if you soak a bandage in it, you have an instant brace for an injured leg or arm. Pretty clever, right?

I've actually seen that done before.

Well I haven't, so it's pretty clever.

Oh, and in case you're not familiar, there's a phial of Bloodblock in there, made from powdered shellfish. Just apply it to an open wound, and it'll scab right over. I included some Antitoxin too... tastes like burned hair and chalk, but it helps resist poison and disease. If someone's already been afflicted by something, it'll help them recover more quickly too. The Tindertwigs are in the separate container there, and I'll assume you know how to work one of those.

If not, a little piece of advice: don't eat them.

about carting around explosives... errrr sounds dangerous. but I can see it I guess. could he tell us more about the job. like specifics?? will there be other people on the job? is there a cart? or a bag? where do we need to go? any reason to expect angry people who want to hurt us?

Your purchase complete, you turn to the old man.

I'm interested in the job, but could you tell me a bit more about it?

Of course. There's a Flind-run quarry a few hours inland, which supplies the local stone. Each month they order several kegs of Thundersalts, a potent but stable explosive mixture, from my workshop. Apparently, this month's shipment wasn't enough for whatever they're doing, and they've requested another keg be sent. Under most circumstances, I'd send them by cart, but the carters have leveraged a hefty fee on transporting explosives ever since... well, if I'm only sending one keg, it's not really worth it anymore.

However, a single keg isn't much heavier than a sack of grain, and you seem fit enough. If you think you could carry it to the quarry for me, or find some other transportation arrangements, I'll pay you 30 Silver for your time. It's more than I'd normally pay a carter, but if it means avoiding that damnable insurance fee, I'm willing to do it. If you're interested, they requested the Thundersalts be delivered as soon as possible.

I have other business in town tonight. How long is this going to take?

Well, I don't think it's noon yet, and it only takes a few hours to get there by foot. If you left soon, and made good time, I think you could be back by evening. Otherwise, I could have it ready for you first thing tomorrow morning.

What do you say?
