I have a fortress of 57 dwarves, and it is running smoothly for the most part. However, none will approach the wood furnace, not even the furnace operator (he's very disorganized). I have the furnace operation labor enabled in other dwarves but they will idle about rather than touch it. I took the furnace apart twice; the last time, I moved it underground.  What could I be missing here?

do you have wood burning turned on?
for some reason wood burning and furnace operating are separate skills.

As a addition to Dangerous beans answer.
Wood burning skill is found under farming labours.
 If that is on, make sure your wood piles aren't set to give to other workshops. If they are hook em up to the furnace. If not ignore that last part.
Also it could be that he is more buisy doing some menial labor rather than his job (dwarves aren't very good with priorities).
But more than likely it does sound as if it's just the wrong skill enabled.

I think he will then have job cancellation and guess the origin of the problem by himself
