Equipment issues and how to make dwarves drop their cloth
« on: January 29, 2013, 09:53:07 am »

This is strange. My military will pick up everything (mail shirt, breastplate, weapons etc) but not high boots, gauntlets and helms - i tried to make them drop their caps, mittens and shoes, but to no avail. Neither forbidding nor dumping those items in inventory makes them drop them - it worked in earlier versions... What to do?

In the military equipment screen, try setting it to replace clothes and exact matches. That's how I get my military to wear only uniform acceptable items.

Wont they drop all their cloth (usual) clothes then? Or only those needed to replace?
Do i need to create a uniform? Cause i always assign armor and weapon individually.

Uh. thx a lot. I just made them replace clothing and then switch it back to over cloth - they just picked up whatever they could wear.

A good way to equip the is in the wiki. The armor page to be more specific.
Its best to create and assign them a new uniform, with replace clothes and exact matches.

 It's something like this: 1 breastplate, 3 chainmail, 6 cloaks, 1 greaves, 2 trousers, 1 high/low boot, 1 socks, shield, weapon, 1 helm, 6 hoods.

They will be completely covered, and this setup (even with just copper armor), is highly (though not perfectly) defensive!

Sometimes they won't go into full-on equipment until you give them an order. I usually set my military, then give my squads a move order or something. Any dwarf straggling behind will usually drop his extra stuff and grab his uniform then.

Depending on how you have your stockpiles setup, they could be trying to get armor that's currently in a bin being hauled (say, to pick up some goblinite).  In this case, they'll assume that armor doesn't exist and just go without.  This is especially aggravating when switching squads, as the dwarf will dump all military labors (and equipment) before trying to pick up new equipment from stockpiles, even though the bins in the stockpiles are being used to pick up the equipment the dwarf just dropped.
