my dwarf wont let go..
« on: January 28, 2013, 02:11:42 pm »

so its like this. i have made a small stockpile for my artifacts, and halleluja, one of the dwarfs actualy makes an artifact weapon *joy* but then another dwarf self-equipped it :( and now he wont let go, i have tried to add him as an soldier and force him to equip another weapon, didn't work. i tried to forbid the weapon, didn't work. i'm not a pro in this game, i just play it for the fun of it ^^' but things like this, really annoy me.. anyone out there who knows how to get it out of his hands without killing him?

I haven't had much experience with this myself, but have you tried Forbidding/Dumping said item?

I'm sure there is another way. But if it comes to the worst just kill him. Like draft him with little to no training and dump him into a siege then forbid the weapon. Then make *Adamantine Everything*

Remove him from the military, or if it's an axe/pick remove mining/woodcutting labors ?

If all else fails, pour magma on it.

In the past, this has worked for me:

Remove all skills/assignments from the offending dwarf.
Create a new uniform, of nothing (no entries).
Make it with ' exact matches ' and ' replace clothing '
Create a new squad, with the offending dwarf in it, alone.
Assign the empty/nothing uniform to that squad (shift-enter)
assign the single-dwarf squad a 'move' (station) order somewhere nearby.

What should happen, is the dwarf will take off everything, and go stand where you tell them.
Inspect the dwarf, to ensure they're really wearing/holding nothing, then forbid the artifact, and cancel his orders.
Remove him from the squad, and he'll go pick up and put on all his old equipment.

AFAIK, artifacts can't be dumped. vjek's solution seems the closest thing we got to a reasonable solution.

Sometimes i wonder if the arsenal dwarf couldn't be brought back to allow one to inspect and manually edit what equipment is assigned/available to soldiers/miners/woodcutters/hunters. Might also move the entire uniform interface there; without an arsenal dwarf, all you can do is manually assign equipment to each soldier. Bottomline is: it's sometimes a pain to micromanage your woodcutters so they only take the base quality copper axes instead of the adamantine artifacts.

If you're careful and skilled, you could try paralyzing the Dwarf, removing his ability to grasp.

but it cutz da treez so much bettererz!

(I always airlock vital equipment stores with a dropchute, and a drawbridge. Artifact gets made, it goes to the 1x1 tile stockpile which has a quality restriction allowing only artifacts, and all other piles forbid artifacts. It goes there, when it gets there, I order the lever pulled, and it falls into the room below, which conveniently has another storage stockpile inside it, preventing job cancellation spam about being unable to path to return the artifact to the drop hatch. When I want a dwarf in there, I give them a station order, and open the drawbridge. This is useful for captains and other important military dwarves that you want wearing only the finest. You can give them the "naked" uniform, and station them in the treasury vault, close the bridge up behind them, then remove their uniform requirements and station orders. They will grab whatever is nearby, which will be garanteed to be artifact quality goodies. Being unable to drop artifact goods means you can assign additional weapons to them, and they wont be displaced. This means you can have a military badass packing a small arsenal as the military squad captain.)

Assign it directly to the uniform of your militia commander, he or she gets priority with item values and should go ahead and take it away.

That is a perfectly acceptable solution! :D

So to recap, one minute everything was going just great, and the next we have caverns collapsing, firebreathing cave beasts, underground brush fires, a screaming swarm of poltergheists back for revenge, zombies in the corridors, drunken brawls in the dining halls, magma pouring into the caverns, rotting miasma everywhere, insanity, madness, and a flying crocodile heading right towards us!

can put stockpiles over open space or hatches/grates now?

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.
