Patients simply not being treated, 10 doctors.
« on: January 28, 2013, 10:38:15 am »

Patients are in the hospital, given water etc. but are not diagnosed nor fixed.
I have assigned 10 doctors in my fort each with hauling labors disabled and sufficient skill.
A hospital zone has also been assigned and all materials are present.

What should I do to fix this?

How many of those doctors have the Diagnosis labor enabled? Is one of them your Chief Medical Dwarf?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Apart from Quietust said (which is very important!) there is still a bug, removing the bed or the table the patient is currently on helps.

Make sure your Chief Med Dwarf doesn't have too many other jobs (you might want to remove really mundane ones like hauling) ; isn't among the injured himself ; and doesn't have terrible personality traits like "despises helping others".  Better to replace him with a less skilled doctor or even a compassionate peasant.

Why would any of these things matter?

You can't imagine why a doctor who hates helping others might hesitate in his duties?

Well.  Okay.  The other things would matter because if your diagnoser is busy, he cannot diagnose anything.

Ok let's find out, if the sick dwarves already got diagnosed.

Zealord, check the dwarves with v -> highlight dwarf -> z -> h and then under 'Treatment' (or another of the 4 tabs, don't remember correctly) should either be a treatment plan (clean, surgery, surture, etc) or something along the lines of "diagnose required".

If "diagnose required", do what smakemupagus said. If there's a treatment plan, well, other than removing bed I'm out of ideas.

Haha, actually when I designated the bed to be removed, a medical dwarf instantly ran up and diagnosed the patient whose bed was being removed. I cancelled the remove order and it worked.

Thanks for all of your help though! :)

It seems most problems with dwarves not doing stuff is that they tend to be lazy bastards, and people are too impatient waiting for them to get around to doing the work they are supposed to be doing. Reminds me of some government workers I know in the building across the street. (I'm pretty sure they don't read the DF forums, so I can say that).

But the OP has 10 dwarves with all the medical labors enabled.  So I don't see how it matters what the CMD's disposition or schedule is like.  In this case he is 1 doctor out of 10.

It's not just the CMD doing the work though. The other doctors are too. Every fort I have the same problem and forget to unassign labors from my med workers. And I always wonder why the injured are left without help. Then I remember... D'OH they are still toiling about doing menial labors. Remove those and the injured are up and about dwarfing again!

Yep, that's a fair point. I should have said make sure your diagnosticians don't have those problems, whether or not they are the CMD.  I usually prefer a small group of dedicated doctors instead of lots of docs who multitask with other jobs, but either way should work.

For some reason I'd just assumed his CMD was the only one...  My mistake.
