"Crikey, look at this lovely indie RTS: Unclaimed World is “a single player game which takes cues from Dwarf Fortress and The Settlers but with more emphasis on survival, improvised crafting and research.” There’s a video of its beautiful rolling, living landscapes below in a video that shows scientists observing wildlife on an alien planet. Developers Refactored explain that they’re aiming to enable us to “plan and manage a human settlement on an alien planet.” So basically they have opened up my head and emptied out my videogame desires onto their design doc.

developer here. First I want to say thanks for all the positive feedback and suggestions we got from the DF community back when we made the first teaser in 2010. Hope you guys are still excited.

Used to be called Conlan's Claim. Not sure why they changed it.

We changed the title because the game is not focused on one particular character. He might kick the bucket from an infection in the first minutes of the game - it's a simulation game where each playthrough is different and you never know who will die and who will survive, who will turn out to be a hero and who will be a coward ...that's why we made a more "generic" sounding title, so that people can be sure that we're not scripting a specific storyline.

Don't worry it's very much a pausable game, no need for quick reflexes - I'm also bad at RTS games and competitive games, that's not what we're making. It's more like a lunch break in Starcraft where you get to decide how to cook and season your Zerg.

Well you could have always named the world Conlan's Claim in honour of the explorer who found it first or something. Dunno, it was just so awesome sounding that I can't think of any reason but copyright to change it :S

Yes, it had a certain literary ring to it I think. The title was dreamed up by the programmer back when he first started developing it, perhaps to suggest in the title that it was a game about real people settling a frontier and not just houses and drones (like in many citybuilders) ...maybe he'll come in and explain when he has the time  Anyway, it needed a backstory to support it, and when we started designing and writing we went in another direction, and decided  to start the game with a survival episode, instead of a land-grab.
-By the way, the planet has still not been named.
