Its all realitive, in a way.  Even a ship that can go 1.5 light speed would still take over a hundred years to reach the planet, and it'd take ten years for a ship capable of going 10 light years per second.  Cosmic distances are massive. 2,000 light years to meet our nearest neighbor; 4 billion light years to reach the other side of our Milky Way galaxy.  Over 600,000,000,000,000 light years to reach the other end of the universe.  You'd need a ship capable of making plotted jumps at about 50,000 light years a second in order to do anything in a realistic amount of time.

Huh? Our nearest neighbor, Proxima Centauri, is ~4 ly away. Tau Ceti is ~12 ly away. The Milky Way is only ~100 kly across. The Exigence takes about 100 years to reach its destination, so its average speed is a little over 0.1 times the speed of light.

Honestly I am starting to think "Take cues from dwarf fortress" actually means "nothing".

Often I have a hard time seeing what they mean since a lot of the "Dwarf Fortress" features are just basic features.

Yes, correct, 0.1 X Speed of Light is more or less the speed of the Exigence. FTL (faster-than-light) travel is not possible in our setting. Also, the Exigence was never planned to be able to return to Earth, it was a one-way mission - burning massive amounts of fuel on the way.

I read the lore, and I'm wondering if you could define the tech level/resource crisis a bit better? A minor nitpick on the lines of having interstellar travel and self-replicating machines, even if the (Edit: near) FTL takes a couple of centuries, you'd think that the skimmers mentioned would have little trouble getting back into orbit, or deploying mechanical probes over humans, a stop in an asteroid belt or two would have provided minerals, etc.

The drop from orbit to the planet surface is a one-way trip (The skimmer aircraft that you see in the video is only for atmospheric flight, it cannot get into orbit.) That's why the small-scale initial scouting mission of the planet (seen in teaser video #2) was so important. Unfortunately, they failed their job when they chose the landing spot for the 2000 colonists.

Probes and robots are also used to scout the planet.

I am pumped for what you'll be doing with the human personality's. Even before they got here i smell interesting reasons for leaving, and with this lot thrown in I'd very much like to hear what you have planned.

The astronauts who signed up for the mission 100 years ago are a kind of strong-willed, adventurous individuals. They fought hard to get a place on the colony ship and even if they somehow could get back to Earth (which they can't) they wouldn't want to, seeing what Earth has turned into since they left (a fully surveilled and pampered "kindergarten")

These days I'm doing harvestable/gatherable resources and crafting, and if any of you would like to contribute with ideas for plants and animals, I've started a thread on our forum where you can put them:

OK, I have to reload the save.
There was a bit of a problem regarding flashfreezing, a ballistae, and a barrel of dwarven ale. Gonna fix it up.
