Hmmm im french for me calling shotgun is like calling dibs, saying i would like to have it or not do something if its negative i.e.: Calling shotgun on dishes mean i dont want to do them while calling shotgun on the ice cream mean im taking it, i might be wrong but thats what i understood.

If i am wrong i would very like a proper explanation of those expression if possible. ( might want to send them via PM tho so we do not derail the thread any further. )

As far as I've heard, calling shotgun is the front non-driver seat of the car (the second seat).

Thats exactly what i understood, calling dibs/shotgun meaning im calling possession, i would prefer to not go any further in the off-topic way. But thank you anyway for pointing out the passager seat thing. It helped me find that description out.

Essentially, yes, it is speciffically used to refer to driving in the passenger seat, popularized in the early 1900s through western fiction referring to riding in the passenger seat up front of a stage-coach, armed with a rifle (or shotgun) to ward of bandits. While that is what the position was actually used for, the term is a newer invetion.
