People are already stockpiling them to make mementos etc. I heard someone even made a huge tapestry out of pennies. Madness I say!

Why did they stop making pennies? Did the entire goverment get sick of loose pocket change?

Well they cost more than a penny to make, so we were literally throwing away millions on pennies. Ergo we stopped making them to free up some more money.

Yea. The Penny is seen as a nuance, and terrible expensive. It cost more then its worth to produce and the man hours required to administrate is stupidly high, and its a bottle neck where ever physical cash is exchanged.

Contributing to the derail, pennies certainly make it easier to fleece people for a few extra cent. Kinda' makes me wonder how canada's economy's going to function without the $0.99 fleecing. The businesses up there must be panicking ::)

The way I understand it, the prices are rounded at the cashier, after taxes have been calculated. No need to adjust the prices on the counters. Though why we can't simply include taxes in the price is beyond me.

I would love to see this happen, frankly. No more guessing if I have or don't have the right amount of cash on hand.

Ya, prices are rounded at the end of the transaction, only if you're paying cash. anything that end in .01 .02 .06 or .07 round down to the nearest nickle, and .03 .04 .08 .09 round up to the nearest nickle. Like math!

But it isn't rounded if you pay with a card. And yeah, they should totally include taxes in the price. It's not like the people care about the money they'll give to the shop, but more how much they pay. Europe ftw.
