So I decided to see what kind of weapon you would start with if you had max points in spearman in adventure mode - You start out with a SILVER spear. What the hell? It seems like you'd do more damage if you put less points in just to get an iron or copper spear.

Hahah, yeah. Armour (if any), food and weapons are all randomly added when you generate your character.
But if you choose to start as an outsider, you start with even less!

Adventurer starting equipment is randomly chosen amongst the weapon and armor grade materials that a civilization has access to. So humans will have bronze, iron, copper, and silver, while dwarves will have bronze, bismuth bronze, copper, iron, silver, steel...

You can also sometimes start out with vermin materials as food, like prepared fly brains. Even though it would require huge amounts of flies in order to get a proper amount of food.
