Roll 115

Josephine balanced the equations of either gambling a buy with her skills in adequate compensation, or trying a simple method with the merchants to ensure in the very least a prototype would be had for their ship--as she was technically now a companion of the warlock Russano.

Considering they were confidential and experimental, her words had gotten her this far. Knowing the prowess and capabilities of the rest of her companions, all would be nearly assured to be given away if she managed her words right.

Though what to say...

"Excuse me dear merchant. These is a fascinating array of equipment, though they look...fairly new and procedurally untested within bounds out of paper."

The Knight caressed the cloak with the tip of her index finger, feeling the intricate subtlety of the weave inside. "Is it possible to retrieve your contact data, and in exchange me and my compatriots would be testing these three devices in the field? I ensure blatant honesty as a result, and knowing from where these ideas are made--they're in need of further advancement."

She was glad she had her contact information within her headset.

BARGAIN IT UP!

The saleswoman you are speaking with draws a small handheld computer, which she uses to photograph your face, presumably to match it with the Navy's database. You hear a soft jingle indicating success of some sort.

[3] "You are correct, they've never been tested in the field. Typically we assign them to individual agents in the field, so your request is not unusual for a Knight to make. I see that you are with Russano Neskratt. If you are joining him on his mission then you are welcome to take prototype for yourself and another for Russano."

Gained two prototypes of choice

((If I take too long, feel free to PM me and if I don't reply, then auto me sensibly. Also, how many SUP do we have?))

With the tankers acquired, it's time to move on to equipping the ship proper. Jo seems to have the right idea, though... "This may be troubling."

Time to convince the Navy we really need that prototype.

[2+1] You consult the admiral, mentioning this 'Distortion Projector' which Tiruin mentioned.

"Ah, that device. We have a few prototypes constructed, although they aren't cheap. They are relatively untested, and they're designed for a battleship. Your ship is pretty much a Yacht..."
He flips out a smartphone and contacts his ship's engineer, Robert Talbot, an individual known among the Royal forces for his experience with modifying ships beyond specifications.
"We says you'll need to swap out the main gun on your ship. None of the turrets, but the spinal mount has to go. You can disassemble the accelerator and store it inside your ship, I'm sure your crew is up to the task. But you'll only be able to install one at a time unless you are truly crazy. Also, it would be best if you updated your ship's firmware to include the latest navy failsafes."

Updating a ship's firmware is a risky business for nonstandard vessels such as your own. It generally takes a grea deal of time to test every system and make sure there are no bugs. Furthermore, the latest Navy OS appears to have some undesirable UI features, including intrusive pop-ups and a pretentious modern style that seems to value style over function.

Attempt to acquire the electro-whip trading the phoenix if necessary, keep the heat warhead if possible.
Then go look for some smgs and machine pistols.

[3+3/5] The Phoenix sells for quite a bit, purchased by a rather shady looking individual who wears a round metal mask and limps around. When you ask him about ammunition, he says he has his own supply.

You have so much cash leftover from the whip that you can buy a second weapon. +2 to that one.

As far as automatic weapons go, there are many varieties, you just have to choose what you want the most out of one. There are several energy weapons available as well.
Particle Guns require nothing more that electrical current, but tend to be short-ranged and illegal in a lot of places. They are generally far more deadly to targets behind the first victim.
Mid-Infrared Lasers generally outperform bullets, but require expensive and toxic Deuterium-Fluoride cartidges.

"Good, that's taken care of."

Search the markets for fruits of different varieties, and practice splitting them into different colors.

[6/5]

Aldros, a Terralike world, has a fairly diverse array of fruits and herbs, both mundane and exotic. Your exquisite tastes are matched by no-one, and as such you spend an unhealthy amount of cash on various foods. -1 Ship Upgrade Points

However, you split the fruit into a wide variety of offensive, defensive, and support devices after setting them on a mahogany picnic bench. It seems the poor table has lost its color, which was channeled into the fruits. Oh well.

RANK UP! Master Chef Petty Officer!

((I guess there's a limit to how many times I can upgrade something. Would adding material and scrap parts to my upgrades help reduce penalties I'll start to get from upgrading a bunch?))

Ryan's all ready to go. Though, maybe he could help out some of the others while he waits. He get's on the communicator and starts talking to the rest of the group.

"Hey... guys... I'm ready... but I figured if you got any equipment you want upgraded... I could do that real quick while we have time..."

Perfectio responds.
"It seems Russano is making arrangements for some modifications to the ship. Jo has gone off to find extra equipment from the Navy, although it seems they are only giving items to Josephine herself and Russano. Perhaps it's understandable."

Josephine viewed the described statistics and status of each project through her headset.
Quote
-Project Arseuz (An experimental weapon that fires a swarm of rockets which hook into their target. They don't explode but can rather be remotely operated in order to move the target around)
"Reminds me how one can 'paint' a target from afar, and the weapon operator, having received the coordinates, must only fire when ready."
Quote
-Graphene Cloak (The result of an experimental mass-production system for graphene-based fabrics. While sheet graphene is easy to build, this cloak consists of multiple sheets woven together using a special production process. This makes it suitable for fabric and yet great as armor. Light, gives +1 defense and stealth)
"This reminds me of a special armor used in one of the ballads and epics I've heard long ago. The cloak of attrition. These seem easily replicable for special forces."
Quote
-Speedgate (A tube which, when powered, speeds up projectiles going one way and slows down those in the other direction. The field can be projected beyond the bounds of the tube at reduced effectiveness)
"For a merchant, this one lacks even general ideas of what kind of projectiles and at how far a speed--even ideas such as ferromagnetic projectiles would work, though that's me thinking this must have limitations as to its technology."

She signed her name above one, and Russano's in his best handwriting (and printed form) above another.

"Considering the nature of our mission...his mission, anyway, I'd choose the Graphene Cloak and the Speedgate prototypes--unless I'm wrong in considering Project Arseuz, in that the missiles could be either hacked by incoming signals, or diverted by point defense. Do environmental anomalies (like dust clouds) disperse the targeting link, or does this not use laser technology?"

((Sorry for the delays. I thought this was about to speed up finally, but then homework hit me hard.))

Roll 116

search out some high caliber particle pistols and burst fire kinetic smg's for perusal.

Particle blasters aren't generally defined by their beam width, but rather by spread. The beams rarely keep their normal width past a few meters, and indeed you want them to spread as soon as possible, which makes the beam width mostly irrelevant.

[4+2/6] You locate a particle blaster on sale at a fairly high price for such a small weapon.

"Uh... alright then. Guess everyone else is busy then. I guess I'll do that later..."

Well... what to do then? Ryan thinks for a moment... and doesn't come up with anything more he could help out with at the moment. How about having some fun until he's needed?

Check out what sort of "Recreational Activities (Class 2)" there is.

[6/6-2] Your powers are very good at passively sensing electronics. And as the thought of recreational activities comes to mind, you think of something that is nearly ubiquitous: electronic music. As you become conscious of the situation, you find yourself accosted by the combined sensory input from every track currently playing in all of the station's restaurants, clubs, and bars.

To escape the madness, you find a place where you can drown out the extrasensory input with something more... traditional. You find yourself in an orchestra hall, where the Fifth Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is playing an old Aldrosian piece from before the days of space travel. Classy!

"Now, I wonder if there are any gentlemen who could upgrade my cloak?"

Search the markets for a a dealer who could properly upgrade my attire.

You discover a store marked by a bright neon-red sign, labelled "Winchell's Attire Upgrades." Inside, you find a stout Centauri fellow wearing a blacksmith's apron and wielding a hammer in one hand, arc welder in another. A row of shelves near the entrance houses all sorts of gadgets and clothing, while the rest of the 'store' is mostly a giant metal shop. The tables are scarred with detailed wear patters indicating great amounts of use.

"Hello! Welcome to my store, where I sell the finest inventions and gadgets I can come up with. I take it that you are looking for improvements to your equipment, yes? I know all about that!"

Not exactly the most trustworthy sort...

Inquiry!

"Ah... hacking. The bane of all forms of advanced equipment. Our specialists are considering these prototypes for mass production, so I can assure you that they pay attention to the possibility of a hack. You can't just take control of a device unless you're a technomancer, after all. I'm not well-versed in the design, but as far as I can tell the missiles do not receive wireless signals until attached. Afterwards a talented user might be able to control them with a pre-designed prototype if he or she can crack the launcher's key... but that seems unlikely to me. I am not sure if the navy would even consider it if it were that vulnerable.

The cloak and the speedgate, you say? Fantastic. That speedgate in particular is a tough one to reproduce, requiring cooperation between engineers and mages. I'm not sure if we will ever be able to mass produce them for the troops."

"Yes, yes. Swapping the main weapon will not be a problem." he replies, though his eyes roll mentally when the request to update his vessel's firmware is made.

Let us get that ship ready to depart.

Let's see, it's about time to plan your first jump. After filling up at Aldros III, you have a choice of three systems to jump to. You won't really be able to predict your journey past that, as information updates only travel at the speed of a dataprobe.

Dione - Independent System
Home to the collectivist society of Aton, a cold moon of a small gas giant orbiting a moderately-sized G-class star. The society developed in a very different way than your own, living on their host moon's equatorial lake and rarely venturing into the frigid wastelands making up most of the poles. The 6-day rotation period led to a strict organizational structure that persists to this day, and the system cannot be said to be a trade hub in any way. However, it is mostly free of crime, and fuel is cheap as the Atons have little understanding of the value of money and labor.

While de-jure a Ross protectorate, the system is mostly independent with frequent Centauri patrols and contraband scans taking place. The Centauri have plans to set up infrastructure around Aton's host planet in order to mine the atmosphere and construct a fuel depot for their fleet.

Inverness - Centauri System
A Centauri border system, Inverness is heavily fortified with a large standing fleet and huge shipyards covering most of its major nonhabitable bodies. Despite all this, piracy tends to explode whenever the Centauri send out a fleet, which takes some time to handle due to the information lag and organizational issues that plague the entire Centauri empire.

While trade occurs here, most of the system's commercial value comes from the Van Buren Mining Company's presence. They might not be too happy about what you did to their station, but hopefully they don't know...

Aquilea - Ross System
A system widely touted as one of the supreme tourism hubs in all of human space. The system is infested with pirates that plague independents constantly, but the Ross navy provides a heavy escort to the liners of Ross-owned corporations and tourism services.

It contains three habitable worlds, two of them terraformed early on in the system's development. A fourth project is underway, and certain terraforming elements such as flourine are in very high demand.

"Ahah! An adventurer! You're looking for something to sneak around with, aren't ya? Something that'll get you places without being seen? I've got just the thing..."

He departs into his stockpile, bringing out a strange cylindrical device with six tori spaced evenly along the length of a cylinder.

"This thing is a little contraption I came up with after I got my hands on a warp crystal. I managed to duplicate the effect a couple times, so I got more lying around in the shack. It'll take you to another dimension and back, and it's powered by your mind! And if you're wondering how much I ask for, not much!"
