As all the participants arrive, Dr. Patrick Kevlak takes the small pile of participant slips and flips through them. As he’s looking through them, he suddenly stops. He gets up and heads toward the group.
“Alright,” he says, his voice ladened with anger, “Which one of you is...” He pauses, looking at one of the slips. “... Ash Dust?”
The group looks at each other, and a girl raises her hand.
“Yeah, you’re going to have to leave. Not only are we only accepting 5 people, you’re under 18.”
“Uhh...” She starts, “Wait. I miswrote that. I’m... 18?”
He glares. “Was that a question?”
“No.”
“And your name is Ash Dust?”
“Yeah?”
He sighs loudly, rolling his eyes upward. “I don’t have time for this,” he mumbles softly. He signals for them to follow.
He leads the group through several glaring white corridors. The iridescent lights blare overhead, and the group’s footsteps echo. After a while, he stops at one of the doors and opens it, walking inside quickly.
The room contained several pods connected to other electronics. “You will be testing our latest product - the tRaNsporGer. Basically, you’ll be placed in an alternate version of the world. I’ll ask for your thoughts on the product, blah blah blah, you get the point.”
Several other scientists approached the group, assisting them into the pods. One of them slightly raises their hand, pointing to Taric. “Um, doctor, there’s only 5 pods.”
“Right, grab the alpha prototype,” he replies, waving him off. The other scientist rushes off.
The scientist returns with a spiked helmet with electrodes protruding. He apologizes to Taric, before attaching the tRaNsporGer. He yelps in pain as the inside of the helmet pricks his head.
“I’ll be turning on the machines in a minute,” Dr. Kevlak states. “This will be a simple test to see the effects it has, both inside the machine and out.”
The machines begin humming.
“Any questions?”
Ruth-Mary raises her hand.
“Yes?”
“... I forgot.”
“Okay, whatever. Starting in 3, 2, 1.”
And suddenly, the world flashed. It turned about. It flipped. It inverted, reverberated, twisted, unwound, spiraled, zigzaged, jumped, flourished, and even fiesta’d a little bit at the end.
And then they are standing on a white plane.
Dr. Kevlak’s voice comes from overhead.
--Est. This is a test of the internal communication systems. Please respond.“We can hear you,” replies Jarick.
“Hear what?” asks Taric, confused.
God damn it, the communication array doesn’t work on Subject 6. He pauses.
Someone tell him his communication array isn’t working.“Your communication array isn’t working?” Jarick says to Taric.
Just... do stuff. The voice clicks and then disappears.
