If Rats are living in your house it means they have access to food.

Like Fruit Flies a lot of the time the easiest way to exterminate them isn't to kill a single one but rather to eliminate their food sources.
I haven't seen any sign of them actually entering the house, I think they're just taking shelter up in the attic because it's cold outside.

I'll set out some traps and more poison, hopefully that takes care of them.  Thanks.

You should make an effort to find out how they're getting in your attic though. Seen a few extermination reality shows. Rats are incredibly clever about finding routes into places. They'll use drain pipes, tree limbs, cabling, whatever they can. Killing the ones in the attic without closing their means of access just means you'll have the same problem again later.

We know how they're getting in, unfortunately there isn't too much we can do about it.  There's a telephone wire that goes to our house, with an overhanging tree on the neighbor's property.

How about using Caulk to seal up the Attick and a Cone to block off the Wire? (Cones are used for Squirrels usually but it should work on rats just the same.)

And as far as getting rid of food, they will just eat through anything stopping them.

It depends what they are eating. In this case it could be absolutely nothing inside the house.

Motion activated 1 watt laser turret on a swivel. Problem solved.

I think Caulks and Squirrel cones (whatever those are called) are slightly more realistic then the Tesla Coil from Red Alert.

Heres my solution I uses, A twenty gauge shotgun and bird shot. Not only will it almost completly evaporate a rat but it doesn't do any damage to your attic and anything damagable by it is probably already wreaked by the rats.

Do you have a friend that will bring their cat around for a while? We used to leave our cat up there overnight when this happened. The cat is not going to eliminate rats but its scent usually convinces the rats to find somewhere else to spend winter. So you probably don't need to leave it in the attic long, just enough to spread some scent around.

Also as for the people making joke suggestions. You suck!

Not ONE person suggested he wear a rat costume, cover himself with rat musk, and live with the rats learning their ways so that he may one day betray their kind and thrust them into oblivion.

Sheesh.

My drunken rat idea isn't a joke suggestion. I had a rat get drunk in my back yard before. Pretty easy to dispose of.

You mean colonel. Unless you are suggesting that the shotgun be loaded with unpopped popcorn. Now that I think about it, that sounds both moderately painful and delicious, depending largely on how many pop. More seriously, the topic was pretty much over with "Lay traps and poison, block off the entryway, maybe spread some cat scent around.".

Remember rats and mice are different animals and as such require different methods to exterminate. Cat's are good at keeping populations low but they're poor exterimators, especially when they're well fed. You're going to want to place traps along the wall edges, the rats will run along them using them as a road system and ideally encounter your trap. You can probably purchase live traps along with regular traps at your local grocery store but the snap can be quite painful. Live traps may be preferred if they're nesting in something you can't afford to get blood on. Keep at the traps and check them frequently, finally remember where you've placed all of your traps as rotting rat's in your attic would be unpleasant.
