Call me insane, but you could try this:
Seal attic entirely, like, air-tight entirely.
Run pipe from car exhaust to attic.
???
If not death, profit!
That sounds like it'e more work than trying to talk the rats out of the attic.

Yeah, and it's too similar to my suggestion of sealing then flooding the attic (with water).

Get sticky paper.

I find myself somehow doubting this.

naturally, it depends on the size and strength of the paper, as well as animal size/strength.

I'm really having trouble believing that any animal that can feel pain would rip itself apart trying to move.

Ever see a trapped animal?  When I was 12 I first saw these traps work.  They were laid out in a factory, in the machinery noone touches. . .

If Rats are living in your house it means they have access to food.

Like Fruit Flies a lot of the time the easiest way to exterminate them isn't to kill a single one but rather to eliminate their food sources.

Posion is really the best bet, to deal with them quickly. And as far as getting rid of food, they will just eat through anything stopping them. I had the issue a few years back when i moved in my house and the d-con in a yellow wedge shaped box was the best i could find. I used about a case of it though and found carcases EVERYWHERE.

You could always burn the house down if the problem gets too severe, blame it on the inspector for not enforcing safety regulations, and sue the inspector.....

But Poison works too......

After having dealt with them before your best bet is a few traps. There probably isn't more than 5 in your house so a couple of days of that and you'd be good. Alternatively you could put out a bowl of wine for them and then wait for them to get drunk then go into the attic with a shovel and a garbage bag.
