Rats in the attic
« on: January 22, 2013, 03:40:30 am »

So we have a bit of a rat problem in our attic.  What's the best way to deal with it?

I don't mind killing the little bastards.  We put some bait out a week or two ago, but there still seems to be lots of activity.  You can hear them bolting around and scratching at stuff.  They haven't come into the house as far as we know.

Unless you have pets or kids that might eat them, poison tabs tend to be fairly effective. Rat traps can get incredibly messy if you're squeamish. Remember not to touch any traps you set with your bare hands. Rats can identify the smell of humans, and tend to avoid it.

Do you currently possess fire arms and scraps of food?

Yes, but I'd rather not put holes in the roof and get arrested.  I was considering a pellet gun for the ones I spot outside occasionally.

You could get a few cats,
Strays, preferably, for their free price and ferocity.
Just don't get bit by one.

More seriously though, go for some heavy duty rat traps, lots of them.
Or hire an exterminator.

Whip up some traps.

I recommend the big plastic bucket smeared with peanut butter, myself.

Cats are probably more expensive, but also likely more effective.

Do you currently possess fire arms and scraps of food?

Where do you live? In the country I see no issues, but neighbours have a tendency to act like dicks in the city.

We're more country than city, but I'm sure someone would complain if I started firing my rifles off in my attic.  Not to mention the damage it would cause to the house and the safety issues.

Cats aren't an option, I'd rather not have the house overrun if I can't make mittens out of them later.

Rats In The Attic sounds like an awesome band.

Other than cats, your option is traps traps traps. Or if you know any good exterminators you could probably get off cheaper by letting them tackle the problem in one sitting [as opposed to months of traps].

1. Seal and reinforce attic.
2. Flood attic.
3. Wait at least 2 days. (Rats are hardy creatures.)
4. Drain attic.
5. Appreciate your now rat-free and clean attic.

Traps and poison. Traps alone wont kill them faster than they reproduce. Once the problem is dealt with you will want to find where they gain access to the attic and concrete it up, or close it off with steel wool.

That's appropriately awesome.

Call me insane, but you could try this:
Seal attic entirely, like, air-tight entirely.
Run pipe from car exhaust to attic.
???
If not death, profit!
