A Pokemon... MMO?
« on: January 22, 2013, 01:15:52 am »

http://pokemmo.eu/

I'd bet 1mil pokedollars that this is very, very illegal.  On the plus side, it's a Pokemon MMO apparently!

This is pretty old, I believe. Last time I checked you needed to load it up with a ROM to play so I'm assuming it is indeed very illegal.

Not that it's not a good idea, I would probably play it if my internet was better.

Pokemon has quite a bit of issues when it comes to going full MMO.

Not that I think anyone would mind a Pokemon MMO that is kinda... not much of anything.

I just started playing this. My issue, however, is I only Nuzlocke anymore. Even when I first play a game (as is my current case with Black and Platinum). So needless to say, I'm doing it here as well, and already lost two of my three first manz (Charmander's still good though).

Judging by the highly competitive nature of MMOs... I foresee people grinding and collecting the best pokemon for their team, with moves that could devastate. I mean, even Pokemon right now has a certain 'mania' community, who always grind (eg, EVs), plan out powerful teams, and live to battle and win... xD

Just a thought.
It looks basically like they ripped all the assets out of a game and slapped a multiplayer UI on it. It looks surprisingly polished. Also, Pokemon with so many people makes the towns look so alive, instead of the ghost ones they are in the normal game. :3

There's also this http://www.pokemonworldonline.net/. Can't guarantee it doesn't have some insidious lurking rootkit or something, though, I always had a weird feeling about it for some reason and never installed.

Was anyone else hoping Nintendo had finally caved on this angle? I've always wanted an MMO in this setting, particularly if you could run around as pokemon and make pokemon guilds, pokemon noises, and bidoof-bomb in massive flashmobs. Get into the pokemon rights angle, which is underexplored, aim it at an older audience (shit, there's enough people that grew up with it), and go into the AI aspects of having companion animals as your sole power, much more than other games bother with. Things like independent action, learned aversion, ALife elements ala Creatures, controlled by client-side scripts within reason.

So much potential, wasted because Miyamoto is convinced people's souls are sucked out by online gaming or something. That and he's probably already terrified of furries.

Pokemon MMOs get removed by Nintendo fast.

I don't really know since I quit looking for Pokemon MMOs since they all get removed.

There's a ton of them that have been going on for a long time, but they're just browser games. Which is really not the same thing.

No... not really.

Pokemon has always been a very simple game at heart and a MMO would kinda be... exactly like pokemon with nothing to distinguish it from the games.

Which is exactly why they havn't made an MMO, among others, is that really... why make one? They are limiting themselves both creatively as they will forever be strapped to their MMO engine, and they are limiting themselves monetarily as selling additional pokemon games become more complicated.

It is why Pokemons with strong internet focus have always been kinda outright battle engines with nothing else really being there.

If they made a Pokemon MMO they would have to make it... different then the game.

Heck I heard a mock version of a Pokemon MMORPG made as a joke and it didn't even sound possible as it relied on having more flexibility and structure then any pokemon game has ever before.

I've seen plenty of Pokemon MUDs, but never really tried them because they're not my thing.

If anyone's still using this, I've got a Bulbasaur I'd like to trade for a lowest - level Machoke / Haunter / Kadabra. :)

Of course it would have to be different O.o Just like WoW was different from Warcraft, just like STO was different from any other star trek game (which is almost entirely good). You don't have to stop making single player games, there's always going to be that niche. But they've already made non-gameboy pokemon games that were great, like Pokemon Snap, the TCG... ok, well that's all I can think of really, as Stadium was like you said, a battle simulator.

Point is, it's not like it's impossible or that there aren't ideas that could work, Nintendo has just been very slow to take advantage of online gaming, never mind any sort of platform besides their own systems. Just think about actually having to chase down and provoke wild pokemon in their natural habitats in order to catch them, and running into and shanking other trainers who have the same idea. Then finding out that the pokemon you subjugatedtrained has a family of baby pokemon, which you've just made prey to the roving bands of wild miltank and diglets (it's a grass-type) Now trade it away to some shady trainer with the same pokemon of the same level to bury your shame forever. See? Ideas!

Just like WoW was different from Warcraft

You mean to the point of being so different as to being almost unrecognisable?

I don't think it is impossible to have a Pokemon MMO, it is just that the requirement the transformation involved in making a pokemon MMO is so dramatically different then Nintendo would never do it.

Nobody wants a Bulbasaur then? It's free if you want it!
