It had lots of things going for it, as far as innovative features.  the ability to duck and lean around corners is something it definitely pioneered.

playing modern FPS games and stuff like Deus Ex:HR modernizes that feature, and ducking is mostly context sensitive (ie you dont have to tell it to lean low and left, it figures that out for you based on available cover)

But I think what really sets it apart is a really great narrative.  few games of any era delivered good story telling, and this was one of the better ones.  now combine the great narrative with the innovating features, and it is really history making.
Hell its got better plot than all of the stuff I have on my desktop combined (except you UFO Defense and Tactics Ogre; I will always love you guys the most).

and Tactics Ogre

I LOVE tactics Ogre... but even I have to say that it... wait... This may not be LUCT.

If it was LUCT though I'd have to remind you that the story while strong in certain points falls appart in others. Such as the Chaos path where the game cannot keep track on how big your army is supposed to be exactly creating a plothole.

It was better then a lot of games story (and heck I'd give you the original UFO defense story as being outright good. SURE it was very minimum but you really felt like you could piece everything together. It is actually something I think the remake should have done, since its story is kinda bad...) but it is something I'd say System Shock did better.

LUCT
What the blazes is this supposed to mean? Usually I can sorta' puzzle out acronyms, or at least google 'em, but I've never seen that, context is nonexistent, and google thinks it's someone's name (in another language).

You know, much as I liked Half-Life, I thought it's plot was at least weaker than System Shock 2.

I agree, and I adore all things Half-Life.  I felt like HL's plot didn't pick up until the second game; the first game was more your classic shooter.  Still excellent, but plot wasn't a major consideration for most FPSes back then.

As Ultima Underworld is one of my most favorite games of all time, I was quite fond of System Shock ( same engine and developer).

HL2 has the BEST plot ever. Bioshocks plot is also really good.

Both HL1 and HL2 have GREAT plots.

As tempted as I am to play HL2 (I bought orange box) I only ever ended up playing Portal and Team Fortress 2. I don't know if it's just me, but I have a HORRIBLE inbred fear of those headcrabs. I am more scared of those damn headcrabs than I am of Amnesia and other terribly scary games, not that I've liked 'scary' games in general.
