Could someone try and explain the appeal of this game to me?  I just flat out don't get it at all.  Also, is it 1:1 scale?  Like, does it actually take an hour to go 60 miles at 60mph?

It's crazy relaxing and pretty fun, but then sudden hairpin turns or traffic problems can put you on the edge of your seat, leading to great satisfaction when you emerge unscathed or !FUN!.

I don't get it. This game is so boring and simple but I keep coming back to. I do a few runs every now and then and I have a lot of fun.

I don't like the fact that you need to level to buy better trucks tho. I mean, I have the money but I can't buy the bestest trucks with the coolest accessories yet.

Relaxation. That's the main appeal. That and goofing off at 100km/hr.

Would it be fair to say it has a similar vibe to Flow then?

No, it requires a lot more attention than Flow. It's kind of like a flight sim, where it's relaxing while you are in the air and then suddenly tense when landing or taking off. Also, it has a small business sim attached.

It's a good thing I'm not a real truck driver because I managed to flip my truck during the tutorial.

Having driven on European roads, Czech roads in particular, the main source of entertainment for me comes from the fact that for once I can be the one behind the wheel of these incredibly annoying monstrosities.

"Sup, I don't care, I'm just gonna pull out in front of you to overtake that other lumbering beast that's going 2 kph slower than I am on the only bit of dual carriageway between here and Stalingrad. Deal with it."

No, the map is much smaller than reality. I'd say about 1:10. The road network is also considerably simpler, most major cities consist of like four streets and a roundabout if you're lucky.

Well explaining the appeal of a game like this is almost impossible.
Altho you could ask what's the appeal of Amnesia.
You walk around a castle and try to not go insane while spooky things happen all the freaking time.

Or what's the appeal of DF?
You just build up a dorf fort have your workshops spit out tons of useless junk for sale to the traders.
And you do all that watching pretty much nonexistant graphics.

Well ETS and other games of its kind (Hard Truck with the exeption of Apocalypse) are just made for a pretty narrow (but apparently substantial enough to warrant sequels) audience.

And no it's not 1:1 scale. People would probably go crazy if it were but driving all the way from eastern Poland to northern England will probably take 2 hours if not more so europe here is pretty small by real life standards but still very big.

I have to admit, as someone who has never been to Europe, I have improved my geographic knowledge (city locations and proximity) by playing this game.

I can't explain it but this game is very addictive and liberating. Instead of shooting bad guys or surviving an apocalypse, all you do is drive trucks... And just by offering different type of gameplay is a great enough appeal to me.

I also used to visit my grandparents town by car, which means 12 hours drive on narrow roads shared with buses and trucks in a SE Asian country, plus pedestrians, cyclists, and public transports along the towns we had to pass through (no inter-provinces highway). The road conditions were bad (potholes were frequent) and there were many reckless drivers--imagine buses and trucks overtaking vehicles in front of  them on a single carriageway road with only two lanes while narrowly avoiding head-on collisions. I had always been curious how different a road trip be in a more modern country.

Anyway, I got more than 100,000 euros from doing quick jobs. Time to get that 400,000 euros loan to upgrade my garage in Metz, buy three trucks, and hire two drivers! I personally like Scania design the best. The front grills remind me of Optimus Prime's mouthplate!

So i got hit by nostalgia yesterday and decided to play a trucking game.
Since i used to own Hard Truck 18 wheels of steel i made a dive in my CD pile.
Found it.
Installed it.
PLayed it.
DEAR GOD it didn't age well at all.
The sign posts (something you have to watch) are all blurry till the very last second.
The other cars are made out of dark matter (your truck immediately stops when hitting one and they can stop and accelerate in an instant).

Well... it's just... bad.
Very bad.

I tried installing the newer games from the series my PC can possibly still run (2005-2007) and boom. Nothing works every single one of them has a problem with prism3d.
Truckin' seemed to have started after some extensive fiddling in catalyst control center but once i tried starting the game proper the same error about prism3d poped up.

Meh... guess i won't  be driving virtual trucks after all.

If you can get dosbox running, there's this: http://www.mobygames.com/game/big-rig

The game I was going to suggest, however, but can't find the title of was one I got to play a couple of times in middle school. It was slightly more graphical than Big Rig, but similar to it, probably on the Macintosh. I remember it was more of an educational game though. The truck driving game was more of a medium to teach you US geography but I do remember some interesting decisions you had to make along the way.

Oh... i never knew about this game. I'll dump it in my Dosbox game folder for later.
*correction* It runs just fine WITHOUT dosbox.
I feel old for some reason now.

In other news.

I managed to get Haulin' working.
The solution is simply hilarious... you have to set texture detail and reflections to low.
After the game loads you can turn them to high and play with no ill effects.
Its almost as logical as your average tantrum spiral.
